📉 The Rhine in Bonn is currently exceptionally low at just 59 cm. For context: • Mean height: ~290 cm • Previous 2018 record low: 81 cm Despite a slight bump expected from heavier rain this Thu/Fri, gauge heights are predicted to stay very low heading into early October. #hydrology

Extreme rainfall ongoing across southern France, with some stations already reporting around 300 mm since the event began late Tuesday. Above-normal SSTs in the western Mediterranean are also contributing to an enhanced moisture supply #weather

It is premature to attribute the Nepal disaster to climate change: we cannot yet say how much warming temperatures and melting glaciers contributed to this specific event. But risks of glacier collapse in a warming Himalaya are clearly growing. My latest at The Climate Brink:

Formal attribution is premature, but the collapse happened on a rapidly warming mountain in a valley losing its ice

Last night's storms in central and eastern Belgium didn't turn out to be quite as intense as initially expected (they ended up being mainly elevated and weakened by previous mid-level cloud/dust and convection), but there were some nice moments anyway. #weather #photography

Beneficial rain showers are moving across the state of NRW and nearby Belgium...but part of that rainfall evaporates as the sub-cloud layer is still very dry, including in the vicinity of the two major wildfires near Aachen (shown in blue). Any amounts will be too small to help weaken the fires.

Climate change increases the frequency and duration of droughts and fire weather conditions — it makes fires worse. But it doesn't start them. 90–95% of wildfires are ignited by humans, deliberately or accidentally. The remaining few percent are caused by lightning.

The UK has just recorded its first three week long heatwave on record, based on recent Met Office observations - 21 days at Exeter Airport and Usk beats the record of 17 days at Cambridge in 1976 by 4 days. It has been a notable summer so far, with records continuing to tumble.
Bar chart titled "Longest heatwave duration in the UK per year," showing the longest single heatwave recorded at any UK station each year from 1959 to 2026, in days. Grey bars give each year's value; most sit between 3 and 10 days, with a dashed line marking the 1991–2020 average of 6.8 days. Notable earlier peaks include 17 days in 1976 and 16 in 1997. The final bar, 2026, is highlighted dark red at 21 days - a new record, held jointly by Exeter Airport No. 2 and Usk No. 2. A Theil–Sen trend line rises left to right at 0.67 days per decade, with a shaded 95% confidence band and a Mann–Kendall significance of p < 0.001. A footnote notes that the record begins in 1959 because station coverage is sparse before then, and that heatwave thresholds vary by county from 25 to 28°C - Exeter is 25°C and Usk 26°C - so lower-threshold regions are more likely to set the annual maximum.
