Mushroom season is in full swing here after recent heavy rain, followed by cool, misty mornings and mild afternoons. Found a few clusters of "porcelain fungi" in a nearby forest today. #photography

📉 The Rhine in Bonn is currently exceptionally low at just 59 cm. For context: • Mean height: ~290 cm • Previous 2018 record low: 81 cm Despite a slight bump expected from heavier rain this Thu/Fri, gauge heights are predicted to stay very low heading into early October. #hydrology

Last night's storms in central and eastern Belgium didn't turn out to be quite as intense as initially expected (they ended up being mainly elevated and weakened by previous mid-level cloud/dust and convection), but there were some nice moments anyway. #weather #photography

Potentially significant severe weather likely across NE Spain/S France today. The broad-scale setup then remains favourable for additional strong to severe thunderstorms later this week, particularly across France, the Benelux and SW Germany. #weather

Jackpot! After many weeks of mainly hot and dry weather which resulted in exceptional wildfires (for this part of the world) and record-low river levels just a week ago, thundery rain produced over half of the average August rainfall in under 12 hours here and in the immediate surroundings. #weather

Once again there's a smell of burned wood in the air today. The air quality in the greater Bonn area remains moderate to poor due to further smoke from the #highfens #wildfire that is being advected to the ENE.

Beneficial rain showers are moving across the state of NRW and nearby Belgium...but part of that rainfall evaporates as the sub-cloud layer is still very dry, including in the vicinity of the two major wildfires near Aachen (shown in blue). Any amounts will be too small to help weaken the fires.

Hmm, looks like GFS wasn't so OTT after all 🫠 Must have been an "ideal" setup for maximised sensible heat flux and strong superadiabat above the parched soil.

Extremely low relative humidity readings once again across large parts of W Europe this afternoon, down to 15 or 10% in a few locations. Wildfire risk remains very high even though winds aren't that much of a factor. #weather #drought

Extremely warm and dry midday profiles ahead of the line of showers and storms in W Germany today. Hybrid/inverted-V profiles supporting strong outflow and locally damaging winds as the storms generate increasingly large cold pools this afternoon. #weather

Some smoke has made it's way from France to far W and SW Germany with an increase in aerosol content before the arrival of the gusty line of showers and storms. The plot on the right shows ceilometer data from near Bonn, Germany. #weather

Thursday is a potentially big weather day for Germany in particular. Extreme heat followed by high-based thunderstorms with a significant wind, dust and wildfire risk in many areas. Another situation that has previously been pretty rare. #weather

Unusually high fire danger developing across parts of E France and SW/W Germany as well this Thursday as strong, gusty winds develop in association with scattered storms, some of which may produce little rainfall (source: EFFIS, copernicus.eu) #weather

Remarkably low heights for the time of year across N Europe in a cool and unsettled pattern this weekend before the next ridge develops late next week which is set to bring the next heatwave over large parts of central Europe. #weather

Overnight lows in the single digits across parts of central Europe last night. The drier than normal soils will have contributed to the cooling effect under clear skies. #weather

The latest estofex.org outlook. Widespread severe thunderstorms are likely today from NE France to N Germany, though with some uncertainties. The air mass is extremely unstable once again, with CAPE values close to the upper bound of climatology across large sections of the level 2 area. #weather

The current estofex.org convective outlook for today and tonight with a broad Level 2 in far NW Europe. It is important to stress that a combination of extreme instability (up to 3500 J/kg) and strong shear is extremely rare in Ireland and Scotland. A meteorologically fascinating pattern. #weather

Lars Lowinski @larswx.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
Not something you see every day. Parts of Ireland and Scotland could see significant severe convection with a risk of large hail and high winds. Instability will become exceptionally high on the fringe of the Euro heat dome compared to regional climatology on Thursday + early Friday. #weather

Level 2 issued by estofex.org for the Benelux and surrounding areas today/tonight, with a broader level 1 around it. Tricky setup as forcing is diffuse, but potent storms incl large hail and damaging winds are possible where initiation occurs. #weather

A feature of this new heatwave (at least in some parts of central/W Europe) will be high dewpoints for several days in a row, leading to additional heat stress. We are not prepared for such episodes as shade, open windows at night, etc. will simply not be enough without additional means such as A/C

For the second time in as many months, a major pattern shift from trough-dominated and (slightly) below average temps to major upper ridge and (much) above average temps is expected across W and central Europe. Heat stress will become a major concern once again for several days in a row. #weather

Notable low pressure cloud swirl on the latest "Airmass" RGB satellite imagery just SW of the UK and Ireland this afternoon. It's a fairly deep system for the time of year in a rather cool and changeable pattern across W and central Europe. #weather

A level 2 issued by estofex.org for parts of Germany today for severe wind gusts and (pot strong) tornadoes. Several small but active cells and line segments are already in progress across the Benelux and NW Germany #severeweather

Thursday may be another fairly active day for some, though in a cool, but very dynamic, strongly sheared environment this time, with low-topped convection including lines and a few mini-supercells -> a local wind and tornado risk in the Benelux and parts of Germany. #weather

The last days have seen quite a bit of convective activity across many parts of western and central Europe. The eswd.eu storm reports show several areas that were affected by large hail, strong/damaging winds and/or heavy rain, sometimes with clusters revealing different convective modes. #weather

A few impressions from yesterday's storms southwest of Cologne on one of the most active days locally since summer 2024 (2025 was a poor convective season, though). Quite a few cells produced hail and strong winds as could be expected given the environment. #stormchasing #photography

Model profiles show noticeably steep mid-level lapse rates, a fairly moist boundary layer + marginal deep-layer shear. Hail could become an issue in some stronger cores, while strong wind gusts also appear likely given well-mixed sub-cloud layers as shown in some high-res model output. #weather

The automated "SPC-style" rawinsonde.com outlook places a large part of NW Germany and the eastern Benelux countries under a "SLGT" risk today. There's some notable instability (MLCAPE 1500-2000 J/kg) underneath slowly strengthening W'ly winds (though shear remains marginal at first). #weather

Lars Lowinski @larswx.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Meanwhile, the focus of convective activity should shift into northwestern parts of central Europe on Friday, where a few strong to severe storms seem possible given a seasonally unstable air mass and marginally supportive deep-layer shear. #weather

Strong thunderstorms have been affecting parts of W and SE Europe "around the heat dome" over the past 48 hours. Some of these storms produced large hail and intense rainfall. #weather

Lars Lowinski @larswx.bsky.social · 26/05/2026
It has been quiet on the convective front thus far thanks to the large-scale subsidence underneath the "Heat Dome". However, there is potential for a few strong, pulse-type thunderstorms today across the S UK in particular in an unstable air mass despite little upper-level support. #weather

The upcoming early-season heat will mainly affect (south)western Europe given the location and shape of the intense upper-level ridge. The EFI for 2m temperatures from Days 2-6 is at the top end of the scale, with significant (>1) SOT values as well. A remarkable signal #weather

Massive smoke plumes from a large bushfire near Gellibrand, Victoria, yesterday which prompted emergency warnings in the area. The fire even produced a towering pyrocumulus and pileus cloud as the hot updraft pushed through stable layers in the mid-levels. #fireweather #stormhour

A spell of extreme heat and fire danger is on the cards across SE Australia. We’ve been through 48C heat in the W Pilbara on 5 January, wasn’t fun 😅 Sth I noticed here: the visibility of information on natural hazards on many platforms, whether it’s cyclones, floods or fires. #weatherawareness
