The Trump administration just suspended Microsoft from sponsoring green cards, claiming it laid off 6,000 Americans while getting 6,300 H-1B approvals. Essentially this is the government saying tech companies will be penalized if they lay off Americans over foreign workers. It’s finally happened.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

Me: I can just play an audiobook from my phone.
My wife: But then it won't be in your voice.

I strongly doubt Adobe is freaking out over this. For many reasons. First, the breathless post notwithstanding, the project probably didn't 'decompile' anything. (At least if the AI followed the instructions it was allegedly given.) It's an attempt to rebuild Adobe from observed functions.

Yup. 1) The cost of solar cells has dropped by over 80% over the past decade, making solar one of the cheapest forms of electricity. 2) Because China subsidized the building of their solar industry. 97% of all solar wafers in the world are now made in China. 3) China can now end the PV subsidies.

I can’t emphasize this enough — “AI” wasn’t born corrupt and toxic. For ~75 years, it was mathematicians and scientists doing interesting, thoughtful work and trying to solve problems, making only the usual human mistakes. What “AI” did to machine learning is as tragic as what it did to artists.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.
