I'm not a categorical pacifist but people have no idea how bad sustained political violence is to live under. one of the common ways that dictators get their initial legitimacy is being perceived as the guy who made that shit stop.

This is all just the John Wick-ification of American political life. People are walking around with insane revenge fantasies in their heads and narcissistically deluded images of themselves as morally righteous badasses who will bring ruin down on their enemies if pushed to do so.

This one is a live issue, because you have three competing ideas among FP on the US left - the pre-16 consensus is dead, we need a new atlanticism that recognizes the far right as the transnational threat they are - let's pretend trump didn't happen - intervention sucks/protectionism is good

i think the reason that people are so vicious about calling merrick garland a coward is that the only alternative is to concede the abject failure of dem leadership as a whole, which stings because we have no choice but to depend on those same leaders who have already failed us once

yes, most of what you know about the civil war came from people who weren’t there and had an agenda (shelby foote-esque southern sympathizers). people who were there described it as a jihad against the satanic plantation aristocrats

I am uncomfortable with the shallow, uncritical lionizing of the IRA. I am, still, more disturbed by the quietism of the British press surrounding the legacy bill, and generally, the British state’s collusion with loyalist paramilitaries during the troubles

I think it's straightforward: any situation involving spending insanely long hours working and living alongside others and operating at the direction of a single leader is vulnerable to abuse. Organizing isn't special in that regard, and in fact the sense of mission can act as a shield for abusers.

After the Civil War, many in Congress invoked education to transform white Southern prejudices & secure republicanism. They abandoned that vision to pursue superficial feelings of reconciliation. We still live with the consequences. Learn more in my book: www.upress.state.ms.us/Books/A/Abse...

Absence of National Feeling
Before the start of the Civil War, the US Congress seldom took up the question of education, deferring regularly to a tradition of local control. In the period after the war, however, education became...

Having little moments and space like that to share in, to live and function together. Feeling that, “this, here, is better than bearable; I don’t want to rush it.” In my case we moved to other sides of the world, but Id like to think the person in that post was talking about something like this

I used to enjoy going to Trader Joe’s with my ex. we’d think of what to eat, what we were excited to cook, sometimes people watch or make color commentary. Sometimes we’d would just walk through the isles quietly

I think that this is partly in conversation with Bertolt Brecht's "To Posterity," which contains the lines "Ah, what an age it is/When to speak of trees is almost a crime/For it is a kind of silence about injustice!" I've always thought if he lived now he'd have written a different line.

It’s generally assumed that “Moby-Dick” has a canonical start date in December 1841, so there’s a good chance that Ishmael has entered the AME Zion church (then on South Second St, three blocks from the water) and the preacher he sees is Frederick Douglass. 🐋
“It seemed the great Black Parliament sitting in Tophet. A hundred black faces turned round in their rows to peer; and beyond, a black Angel of Doom was beating a book in a pulpit. It was a negro church; and the preacher’s text was about the blackness of darkness, and the weeping and wailing and teeth-gnashing there. Ha, Ishmael, muttered I, backing out, Wretched entertainment at the sign of “The Trap!”

Blaming the victim is not only cowardly, but also short-sighted. Caving to Beijing’s transnational repression will only encourage more of it. Where does it end? Every Brit should just shut up about CCP's abuses?

One of the left critiques of YIMBYism is that it uses growth to try and sidestep labor-capital conflict, but the thing is that stagflation broke a fragile labor/capital accord and then capital won the ensuing conflict. There's a lesson there for contemporary efforts to build working class power.

The more I think about the USAID cuts the more I understand John Brown. What can you do when your country carries out a monstrous crime on a Biblical scale and so many don't care because of who the victims are and so many of those who do care treat it as just another issue instead of the only issue?

Rather beautifully, Professor Mahmood Mamdani's dedication in "Neither Settler Nor Native" is to his trail-blazing son, @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social. He quotes the revolutionary Chinese writer Lu Xun's famous concluding lines in "Hometown": 「其實地上本沒有路,走的人多了,也便成了路。」 -魯迅,故鄉 #everynightapoem
For Zohran,
You teach us how to engage the world in difficult times. May you inspire many and blaze a trail!
It’s like a path across the land—it’s not there to begin with, but when lots of people go the same way, it comes into being.
—Lu Hsun, “Hometown”
