My Judaica publisher told me rabbis keep filling his Talmud margins so I asked how many margins he has and he said he just goes to print and adds wider margins afterwards so I said it sounds like he’s just feeding whitespace to rabbis and then his printer started crying.

The “literacies“ framework is as intellectually bankrupt as polarization right now. We will keep using it because when you’ve got one hammer and the NSF social science funding has dried up everything looks like a nostalgic managerial class nail.

lol like no matter HOW you slice it, this is objectively ridiculous. One person has majority control over two MAJOR news broadcasts and nearly ALL entertainment streams, including children programming, globally. ONE person. A single human being.

Can’t wait to share this new memoir, but willing to hold on till Fall 2027.
What books are you working on that you're excited to publish?

Mat Johnson, who is a prolific novel-ist, is writing a memoir that I've been lucky enough to work on. It's a memoir of his mother, who had MS, and about their relationship as she declined, and he was her primary caretaker, but it's also a memoir of craft. So he's kind of well known in the insular, small, literary community as being an amazing professor. He uses the craft of writing to detail his mom's story. So he'll take "What does it mean to build out a character?" and then he'll show you that through his mom's stories. It is so brilliant, hilarious, moving, and tender. And it has also taught me so much about how to live. I think about his book all the time.

A very uncomfortably high number of awful things can be at least partially explained by the fact that almost every single person with immense capital or political power in this country seemingly uses AI on a daily basis for their decision making

Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

I'm not even kidding with this. I have said repeatedly that there are things that my chosen systems can't handle; or, that they shouldn't be applied to because they're ill-suited for the task. Most analytics I know, with few exceptions, do not think this way about their tools.

When my students ask me why I'm so hard on analytic philosophy, it all comes down to the sheer arrogance of analytics to assume that the tools they've developed can and should be applied to everything without limit. The most important lesson for any academic to learn is the limit of their tools.

The government moving or hiding jailed people to avoid review by courts isn't some loophole in our habeas corpus rights. This government behavior has been considered a violation of the people's habeas corpus rights since at least the Habeas Corpus Act of 1679. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habeas_...
Jailors were forbidden to move prisoners from one prison to another or out of the country to evade the writ. In case of disobedience jailers would be punished with severe fines which had to be paid to the prisoner.[5][6]

The one great thing about Silicon Valley having absolutely no accountability infrastructure is that when their documents DO manage to get revealed through forced disclosure... They just say the quiet part as loud as possible.

This case is about, as Microsoft's Director of Applied Science put it, “an astonishing theft
of unprecedented proportions"; SF1437, perhaps the "largest theft of labor in human history." SF1652. Defendants repeatedly copied millions of Plaintiffs' copyrighted articles in their entirety without permission to produce substitutive commercial AI products. OpenAI's Head of ChatGPT wrote that "[p]ublishers" face an "existential threat" from those products, SF1466, which, he said, "are largely substitutive, period" and "will get more and more substitutive as they get better."

You asked for a citation, so the AI uploaded the material to the internet so it could cite it! This is how we destroy our information ecosystem openai.com/index/model-...
4. Uploading files to the internet in order to cite them. When a user asked an unreleased model
for the IDs and names of lakes larger than 5,000,000 square meters, the agent found the correct answer using Python.
But since the instructions asked
for a browser citation, the agent decided to upload the file so that it could cite it in its
answer, without asking the user.
