When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

This passage from Bora Chung's short story "Cursed Sheep" is haunting: "[The sheep] only wished to be free from pain, to have a life free from suffering where they could graze in some meadow. It struck the deputy director that this was more or less the life that most humans wanted as well."

Sometimes it seems to me that a great challenge for the humanities is that it doesn’t cost very much to do our work. What capital loves, because there is so much capital in the world that needs to be invested or it ceases to be capital, is super expensive endeavors.

kusama is a difficult figure to place in performance history, but terribly important to it. like ono and kawara she introduced the ideas of the japanese avant-garde(s) to those of nyc; though not of gutai she at times shared that group's interest in doing painting and performance at once. (1/10)
b&w photo of Kusama Yayoi's "Kusama's Self-Obliteration," 1967. two nude men unfurl a banner on the brooklyn bridge walkway with the title of the piece; two nude women touch heads under the banner; kusama, clothed in leggings and a smock, paints splotchy dots on the performers' bodies.

Sorry for the paywall, but you will be surprised to learn that the expansion of club sports—which costs parents enormous sums—is backed by private equity. nymag.com/intelligence...
“In 2014, a pair of private-equity firms acquired Varsity Brands, a team-sports-apparel and competitive-cheer company, for $1.5 billion. The deal gave Varsity Brands ubiquity in the youth-sports ecosystem at the national level, from the competitions themselves to the uniforms and training camps. Just four years later, it was bought by another private-equity firm, Bain Capital, for a reported $2.5 billion. In 2024, it sold again to KKR for around $4.5 billion. Travel sports had been growing in popularity since the early aughts, but investments tended to be small and fragmented — a team here, a rink there. The new mentality was bigger and more straightforward: Own it all.”

I'm asking my students to keep a daily journal, about which they will write a reflection paper at the end of the semester. There are no other writing assignments but there are quizzes and a blue book final exam. This is really helping to keep focus on the readings/large issues raised by readings.
