“Reid began searching Australian military service records to piece together the story. ‘The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn,’ he said.” That’s family history research captured in ten words. #genealogy #familyhistory

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

80 hours of embroidery! This aerial landscape is directly inspired by Dartmoor and I'd say I have another 30-ish hours to go? I'm now starting to fill in the fields for the sheep, the tor area will be done last as I'm still deciding whether I want a slope or not 😅 I hope you like it! #art
An embroidery hoop containing a sewn aerial-view landscape. It depicts a moorland scene in a range of green shades, about 70% completed.

First post - Eoin Higgins has a screen shot from X that says "FAA to Deply AI Air Traffic System at DC-area airports Starting Monday". He mocks it by suggesting that AI will screw up and kill people but then offer a heartfelt apology for the mayhem.

Second post - Helen Kennedy reposts @carlquintanilla "U.S. Federal Aviation administration temporarily halts flights into Newark and Philadelphia airports due to communications issues with some frequencies at air traffic control facility" This is form @reuters.com

An excellent thread highlighting how family history is history. Serious family historians/genealogists bring rigor, analysis, and the determination to leave no stone or source unturned in their research. Too bad NPR didn’t do the same for this story. #genealogy

#FamilyHistory roundup -who is the first forgotten child you found that died of a vaccine preventable illness? Mine was my great-uncle John Lenihan. He died as a toddler whooping cough (pertussis). It takes only minute to make a comment condemning proposed changes to federal vaccine recommendations.

what better way to make a class focused on writing into a "writing-intensive" educational experience than for students to use AI to write their papers for them www.thecrimson.com/article/2026...
screenshot of the linked article, which reads:

"Harvard faculty in the humanities and social sciences expressed broad concern over an email Harvard College Dean David J. Deming sent students Wednesday suggesting that artificial intelligence be integrated into "writing-intensive" courses.
"Deming identified "AI-use policies" as a priority for the academic year in the Wednesday message, saying he hoped to roll out College-wide advisory guidelines on AI by the end of the year and proposing "AI acceptance or even encouragement" in writing- and project-heavy classes."

As an Old, this makes a lot of sense. I made my career, first as a translator, then as a writer, as computers were becoming common, and each new generation of computing added value. Now, each new feature is just a way of maximizing surplus value and extracting money from people.
