We can't fund public education but can bomb schools in Gaza & Iran We can't fund affordable housing but can build concentration camps & private prisons We can't fund school lunch but Hegseth can buy millions in steak, lobster, & king crab We've always had funds—we lack politicians with integrity

palestinian journalist posting on twitter that his bluesky account was immediately taken down purely because he was in gaza. all palestinian accounts are assumed to be spam.
Tamer Nahed 𓂆🇵🇸
@Tamer_Alnoaizy

BlueSky is one of the worst platforms I have ever dealt with. Within seconds of creating a second account, after my first one was shut down just two days after it was created, my account was closed again. This happened despite the fact that I hadn’t posted anything or followed anyone. I was only in the process of adding a profile photo, yet I received an email claiming that my account was “spam” and that it was “causing harm.” What kind of logic is this?

The painful truth is that the account was shut down the moment it became clear it was created from inside Gaza. It seems we are no longer allowed to write or speak about what is happening to us here. They are not afraid of content itself, but of our voices and the reality we carry with us.

Millions are spent to silence these voices and to erase the truth. I am exhausted by this platform and by how our photos and videos, which document real suffering, are treated as “violations of community standards,” as if pain itself has become a crime.

What is happening is not simple moderation or policy enforcement. It is an attempt to erase our existence and bury the truth. And honestly, this is shameful and unbearably painful.

[the original poster has included two screenshots showing the email from bluesky admin informing him that his account has been taken down for being 'spammy, inauthentic or disruptive to users'. it's the standard boilerplate you get when they take moderation action.]

Here is the co-founder of Substack blaming its users for seeing Nazis on the platform and then trying to deflect from the fact that Substack revenue shares with Nazis by saying he encounters more extremism here on Bluesky (which doesn't revenue share with Nazis). This is I ndefensible.
screenshot of an exchange on substack:
Hamish McKenzie 19h
There's so much good shit on Substack. Thank you, everyone.

Olivier Simard-Casanova 19h
Are the Nazis you let operate here and financially benefit from included in your comment?

Hamish McKenzie 19h
That you look at Substack and can only think of Nazis says a lot more about you than it does about this platform.
I encounter extremism on this platform far less than anywhere else on the internet (including Bluesky, which you seem to approve of). I don't even know how to find these evil people you speak of on Substack—| literally never see them-and I help run this place!
Meanwhile, I encounter, and enjoy supporting, far more quality art, culture, and journalism on this platform than on any other platform l've ever found on the internet.
I know I will never convince you of this reality. But it doesn't matter. Someone has to say it anyway.
Olivier Simard-Casanova 6h

What it says about me is that I don't want to lend my credibility to Substack by writing on a platform that is fine platforming Nazis - and even financially benefit from platforming Nazis. The facts are clear, when you had the opportunity to act you did close to nothing:
I'm convinced that you find great people on Substack. I'm also convinced that Substack helps a bunch of people making a living out of their work. See, l'm not some obtuse ideologue who doesn't care about the facts. I can be convinced.
But these facts don't negate another series of facts: you platform Nazis, you're fine platforming Nazis, and you financially benefit from platforming Nazis.
Again, I can be convinced. But not by cherry-picking facts to create a self-serving narrative. All the facts matter.
Speaking of facts, it's funny that you mention bad actors on Bluesky. Bluesky has a robust trust and safety team to deal with them. How many people work on trust and safety at Substack?
May I suggest that the reason why you don't find Nazis on Substack is because Substack doesn't have a robust enough trust and safety team for you to do so - assuming there's even one?
At the end of day, and contrary to what your cherry-picked and self-serving narrative tries to say, the fact that Substack platforms Nazis does say a lot about the platform.
