I could be missing something in the article here but I wish there was a chart on how much the US imports from Middle East vs Russia over time to get a better sense of why the prices might not decrease.

Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…
Beware the
alibi of photocopies ! Photocopies are indis-
pensable instruments. They allow you to keep with you a text you have already read in the library, and to take home a text you have not read yet. But a set of photocopies can become an alibi. A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many. Defend yourself from this trap: as soon as you have the photocopy, read it and annotate it immediately. If you are not in a great hurry, do not photocopy something new before you own (that is, before you have read and annotated) the previous set of photocopies. There are many things that I do not know because I photocopied a text and then relaxed as if I had read it.

We really need to make Meng's Big Data Paradox central to teaching, don't we? Researchers don't know this stuff bc they have never been exposed to it. But it is fundamental. (Link to paper PDF statistics.fas.harvard.edu/sites/g/file...)
3. Compensating for quality with quantity is a doomed game.
3.1. A law of large populations? Under a probabilistic sampling, a central
driving force for the stochastic behaviors of the sample mean (and alike) is the
sample size n. This is the case for the Law of Large Numbers (LLN) and for the
Central Limit Theorem (CLT), two pillars of theoretical statistics, and of much of
applied statistics because we rely on LLN and CLT to build intuitions, heuristic
arguments, or even models. However, identity (2.3) implies that once we lose control of probabilistic sampling, then the driving force behind the estimation error is
no longer the sample size n, but rather the population size N. Specifically, (2.3)
and (2.5) together imply that
(3.1) Zn,N ≡ Gn − GN

VSRS(Gn)
= ρR,G1−f
f σG
1−f
n S2
G
= √
N − 1ρR,G.

I keep seeing this Semafor graph that seems to show the Trump administration’s effect on international visits is comparable to the pandemic. My first thought was “that can’t be true” and indeed it is not. This is monthly data. We only have to Jun/Aug 2026. The lines are over-fitted to the months.

Modeling non-response is an example I like to use when arguing that "descriptive" statistics also require causal inference. To describe the population, you have to model what causes the sample. Similar to occupancy modeling in ecology in many ways.

From this analysis, we present a taxonomy of 13 data operations, what we dub disclosure tactics. These tactics give us a shared vocabulary to think about design tradeoffs in terms of disclosure, whether it is to protect privacy, persuade viewers, or simplify complex patterns. 7/n

For example, imagine a bio-statistician Fred who works at a university medical center. He’s tasked with revealing clusters in patient data to an industry partner, while protecting patient privacy. 3/n
The image is a four-panel comic illustrating a privacy dilemma in data visualization. In the first panel, a scatterplot shows individual data points, and Fred wants to hide these while still showing clusters. The second panel shows aggregation into a heatmap, which distorts clusters and can still reveal individuals. The third panel depicts adding noise, which hides clusters but requires fine tuning and introduces spurious signals. The fourth panel shows smoothed contour shapes that reveal only the clusters, which Fred finds effective and easy to produce.

Visualizing real-world data means making tradeoffs: Datasets can be messy, high-dimensional, or contain sensitive information. Designers are constantly making judgment calls about what to show and what to leave out.  2/n
