I think holding a fire sale for foreign investors, including Americans, and selling off Canada’s critical infrastructure is a bad idea and inconsistent with shoring up our sovereignty. Just one man’s opinion!

Let’s talk vote share, #ableg! NDP: 42.7% → 46.6%, increase of 3.9 points. UCP: 56.3% → 43.0%, a collapse of over 13 points. Much of that lost UCP share didn’t migrate to the NDP. That makes the result more interesting than simply an NDP/UCP swing. And suggests the NDP has a LOT of work to do.

So excited to see this paper, "The Law of the Mid-Transition" from Alison Gocke. I met Alison through Emily at a workshop we hosted together on fossil fuel transition in 2023, and this came from that stream of thinking with Emily, @shastingssimon.bsky.social, and that small group.

To address climate change, our energy systems need to transition from fossil fuels to clean energy resources. There is a tendency to think this transition will occur in a linear, seamless progression:...

Posted on LinkedIn by @globalecoguy.bsky.social: Actual versus projected buildout for solar power vs. carbon capture
Two-panel chart comparing actual performance versus modeled projections for two climate technologies, spanning 2010–2040.

Panel 1 — Carbon Capture Capacity (megatons)
Line chart. Y-axis: 0 to 4,000+ megatons. A single dark red line (actual carbon storage) runs nearly flat from 2010 to approximately 2025, remaining well below 500 megatons. Beginning around 2023–2025, a fan of teal/blue projection lines diverges sharply upward, with the highest trajectories reaching approximately 4,000–5,000 megatons by 2040 and the lowest remaining near 500 megatons. Actual performance is far below all but the most conservative projections.

Panel 2 — Solar Power (terawatt-hours)
Line chart. Y-axis: 0 to 2,000+ terawatt-hours. A single dark red line (actual solar electricity production) shows exponential growth from near zero in 2010, rising steeply to approximately 2,000 TWh by 2023–2024. A dense fan of teal/blue projection lines originates around 2023–2025 and extends to 2040, spanning a wide range from approximately 200 to 2,000 TWh. Actual solar production meets or exceeds the upper range of nearly all projections.

Implied contrast: Carbon capture has drastically underperformed projections. Solar power has dramatically outperformed them

This is too long already. The MOU: - greatly waters down climate policy - leaves bit of climate policy in place but not nearly enough for any reasonable pathway - seems to create a way for a pipeline to be built before CCS. or as @katharinehayhoe.com said it here: bsky.app/profile/kath...

This part in the weeds means that builders and operators of CCS amounts to a direct subsidy for building, and getting credits for operating means a double counting of emissions reductions (they will already get credits for reducing emissions, then they get credits again for the money they spend)
Direct Investment

1.4.1. Alberta will design and administer the TIER Direct Investment program, including the issuance and use of Investment Credits under the TIER Regulation and any future standard for Direct Investments, in a manner that preserves market function and the Effective Price. This will include:

1.4.1.1. Eligible investment amounts for all projects will be limited to 50% of eligible capital and up to 50% of operating costs directly attributable to the approved project, net of any government grants, TIER Fund support, investment tax credits, or other public financial support. Development studies and related expenses will not be eligible under the program.

1.4.1.2. Consistent with the TIER Regulation, Investment Credits will be limited to use in years in which emitters have compliance obligations prior to their expiry or in substitution for credits used in past three years compliance.
