Beatrice, Sam, and I ride our bicycles down a quiet residential street with Calgary's downtown cityscape prominent in the background. Fall foliage dots the road surface, and a tree with a yellowing canopy is prominent at the top of the frame.

Sam operates a 1960-era mobile printing press to make a special two-colour print that briefly tells the story of George Stanley's design for Canada's new flag, adopted in 1965. The press is mounted in the cargo hold of a tricycle cargo bicycle.

The resulting print, with artwork done by Sam Hester. It contains the illustration of a George Stanley and the new Flag of Canada. The print reads, "George Stanley, a born-and-raised Albertan, designed Canada's Flag in 1964. Recalling his Calgary childhood, he made this sketch -- a flag that kids could easily draw! He sent it off to Ottawa ... and his design ended Canada's great flag debate! 'To me the new flag was a glorious thing, bold and proud, asserting Canada's nationhood for all to see.'" The card bears the signature of Sam Hester, who illustrated it.

It is mortifying to find a typo in a piece you just published. Doubly so when it's in the text AND a pull quote. Although I'm told typos now indicate a human touch and that they are, in our time, kind of a good thing. Okay. Suuuure. But a good editor should not be happy with typos.

In 2019, Harry Sanders wrote for The Sprawl about an old Calgary violin shop that got demolished that year. A lovely elegy capturing a forgotten bit of the city's past. Today I republished it in his honour. (Harry died on Sunday, at the age of 59.)

At city hall this morn. Green Line. On the floor is an amendment from Cllr. McLean to have admin "identify and evaluate potential alternative alignment options" for downtown. As I've said previously: the Green Line is best understood as a (very costly!) multiyear performance art project. #yyccc

Had a video "go viral" on the weekend and it makes me realize that going viral has nothing to do with anything. It's just the machine grabbing something and firing it all over the place because there's an insatiable "need" for "content." No boost for The Sprawl or any other benefit I can see.
