But doesn't the video perfectly shows how it's useless, because as long as my dude over there is not looking over his shoulder, we can see his super secret stuff and as soon as he looks away, the screen tells us we should pretend we were not looking

I sometimes think the water issue is almost good PR because the water issue is relatively easy to solve compared to the CO₂ emissions and resource depletion it distracts from

I think we need to differentiate between “AI uses a lot of water!” (not necessarily bad on its own) and “AI stresses local water supplies” (a potentially real issue). The distinction is important because even “modest” use can cause serious issues, especially given the locations of data centers

if I remember correctly, shopping carts are the explicit example in the GDPR of functional website behavior that doesn't even require opt-in. (possible exception: interest in pharmaceutical products could be consider sensitive PII)

I will simply be the millionth person to say that an LLM is made up of a bunch of servers owned by a company. OpenAI is committing crimes in broad daylight, and we're all supposed to collectively act like we don't understand this because computer or whatever.

Real pipes always look like the plumbers used some left over corners that allow them to avoid cuttting a few straight pipes. Doesn't matter that these cost more, the customer pays for the material!

Good articles that are illustrated with AI slop exist. There's also an infinite supply of good articles, so I need to decide quickly what to read and what to ignore. The probability of finding text slop with image slop is very high, so pardon me for ignoring your hard work if you taint it with slop.

This is a canary resuscitator, which miners would use to revive canaries that had passed out from toxic gas, because ideally not only do you care, you don't even leave the bird behind. just a little mining history and not at all a furious scream

If your computer does illegal things, you are responsible. If your computer does illegal things because of what your customer does with it, there’s laws for that too. That whole please regulate AI is such bullshit. Except perhaps it’s time copyright law is actually enforced

I really hate the framing of these stories as "an AI agent broke out and hacked something." No, an inadequate sandbox meant that a powerful and unpredictable computer program was set loose on the open internet by the company that designed it. The agency isn't with the "AI agent", it's with the firm

Exactly that kind of thing initially made me think it was a bad idea to not use YouTube embeds, but our stats show that only about half of our visitors accept third party assets, so even without covering edge cases we're doing better already!

I can live with logging in after every restart, even if I'd prefer to that with Touch ID instead of manually typing the six digits. I understand 2FA is good, but the code could be the first?

You mean the macOS Touch ID & Password settings, right? I just checked and to my surpise it worked! Because the other options allow me to skip my PW and use Touch ID instead. I'd expect 'Use Touch ID for autofilling passwords' to be the equivalent: that it would require me to type in my system PW

tnx for asking 😊 They refuse to say "racism is bad, we don't sponsor that." I'd let their sponsoring of a racist YouTuber pass if it was indeed a mistake. But the only wrongdoing they admit is that this case "could distract from our message and divide our community" after it got attention.

I did that last weekend just to see if I can move away from Proton but: 1. Every time I start Firefox, I have to log in to the iCloud extension with a 2FA code 2. For every password to fill, the iCloud extension requires Touch ID or a password. Super secure, but I don't have time for that

Sometimes you look at an old HTML document and see some weird tags and snippets from bygone eras. I've complied many legacy HTML bits I've noticed and documented what they were and why there were present. Many of them are rather obscure. Satisfy your curiosity: vale.rocks/posts/html-r...
