Absolutely heartbreaking letter from the mother of Alex Pretti, six months after his murder by ICE agents. How is it possible that we still haven’t seen even a hint of justice for such a heinous crime?

And all of their comings and goings revolve around the ecosystem of The One Tree I "Own"
How many human bodies
I own one single tree on the fraction of one single acre
I also own the dirt and bugs of and it’s so stupid to me
that that’s legally true under the laws of man who are
responsible for regulating the laws of God when he’s
not looking.
Look at this magnificent wooden phoenix
soaring here two hundred feet high unfurling its
wings closer and closer to the clouds infinitesimally
every second.
I wake up and go outside on a pigsty humid or
arresting frigid morning and stretch up and out
and inhale so big when the air is still amenable to
it and look over at this tree doing the same move
but that’s where the similarities end between us. It
must be three hundred years old this creature and
so everything and everyone that was around when
it crowned out of the earth is dead and gone by now
and a lot of it all absorbed into its growing. How
many exhaling human and animal bodies aided in
its girth?
Right now two squirrels are chasing each other
around its bark and bulk spiraling up and down
running without gravity like two Spider-Men.
Spiders-Men. They’re undulating their tails in a way
I’ve never noticed before in this hypnotic movement.
Undulating is a gross word but it is accurate. I kind of
142
get how it would fire them up to be honest. It’s not like
we don’t do stupider dances to get laid.
We had some workers come over and cut off a
couple of the tree’s arms so they wouldn’t break into
our house and I’m sorry about that if anyone is listening
who can absolve me for that sin. As I mentioned God
isn’t available.
I can’t believe I own this tree. I have to go talk
to a lawyer who knows about property rights. Maybe
better to talk to a philosopher. A druid. It’s not right it
should be the other way around.
On the other hand the tree doesn’t even know that
I exist and I’ll be dead long before it is felled so who is
the landlord here after all.
I suppose I could murder it. I couldn’t personally
my hands are too soft and my back is no good but I
could pay tho…Then after that without anything else to leave
behind besides this husk for something else to grow
on top of. Could be an even bigger tree. The biggest
one you’ve ever seen. And I’m in there somewhere
with all of you.

I keep catching myself having this feeling that surely this cannot stand.
Every single post is like a punch in the face. Every headline is a moral injury. Could be I’m extending too much grace here but it occurred to me recently that maybe all of the people who “don’t pay attention to politics” one day tuned out not because of their indifference to others’ suffering but for the exact opposite reason. It’s all too much to behold.

And then eventually you’re under foot and pinned down yourself and you no longer have the pleasure of apathy.

There are moments in every horror movie where the characters’ casual behavior despite evidence of obvious malevolence in the shadows strikes us as ridiculous but isn’t it always so much easier to tell yourself it was probably just the wind? The creaking floorboards of an old home. Pulling the sheets up over your head like a child does.
I’ve found myself doing something for the first time in my life lately which is racially profiling people. Out of concern rather than malice that is. Sizing up some guy. I hope this poor sonofabitch makes it home safe tonight. In the morning behind the laborers in line at Dunkin Donuts. Every single 4’10 cashier girl at my Market Basket. Please let this person’s life remain at the baseline level of “not that great” we have all become accustomed to.
I keep catching myself having this feeling that surely this cannot stand. Something will be done. It's such an act of hubris to think that. Especially coming from an American. To expect that everyone of course recognizes the value of our lives. A favor we've almost never extended to anyone else.

When Tom Homan, Trump and other Republicans defend the masking of ICE agents, I can't help but think of Orson Welles announcing on his radio show his intention of identifying the South Carolina police officer who violently attacked and blinded the uniformed Black veteran Isaac Woodard in 1946.
Naming the policeman Officer X, Welles addressed him directly. "Wash your hands, Officer X. Wash them well. Scrub and scour, you won't blot out the blood of a blinded war veteran," Welles said. "Go on, suckle your anonymous moment while it lasts. You're going to be uncovered. We will blast out your name! We'll give the world your given name, Officer X. Yes, and your so-called Christian name. It's going to rise out of the filthy deep like the dead thing it is."

@bencamach0.bsky.social published his investigative piece about LAPD shooting at a crowd of party goers. After a long fight for the public records, he found out there was more to the story than what the LAPD told the public and internal investigators. inadvertent.substack.com/p/the-blue-h...
LAPD made no mention of CSP's connection to the shooting in early public messaging about the incident, despite the involved officers having intimate knowledge about the neighborhood - its gangs, its layout, its culture and people - through their work in the program.
At the same time, CSP sat on the verge of becoming its own bureau, a move that would establish the community policing program as a core element of LAPD's organizational structure. CP's connection to the shooting was never publicly mentioned until Inadvertent obtained records about the incident almost four years later through a lawsuit.

A West Covina police officer is charged by the LA District Attorney with stealing cash during traffic stops. Officer Jose Garcia allegedly stole $1,000 over three traffic stops. He faces four years in state prison plus a consecutive year for the crime.
West Covina Police Officer Charged With Stealing Cash During Traffic Stops

If convicted as charged, Jose Garcia faces up to four years in state prison and an additional consecutive one-year jail term

WEST COVINA, Calif. – Felony charges have been filed against West Covina Police Officer Jose Garcia for allegedly stealing cash from motorists during traffic stops beginning in 2024.

“Stealing from the very people you are sworn to protect is a profound betrayal of the badge,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. “When an officer turns routine traffic stops into opportunities for theft, for their own benefit, it corrodes public trust and endangers the integrity of our justice system. We will use every legal tool at our disposal to ensure that officer is held fully accountable for these alleged abuses of power, and we will not hesitate to hold any law enforcement officials responsible for any crimes committed in the course of their duties.”

West Covina Police Chief Antonio Cortina added: “While we fully support due process, any criminal conduct by an officer, particularly involving theft or abuse of public trust, is unacceptable and undermines our mission. We are deeply concerned that an officer may have violated the public trust and the fundamental principles of policing. We are committed to ensuring accountability.”

Jose Antonio Garcia (12/24/86) of Long Beach is charged in case 25WCCF01222 with one felony count each of misappropriation of public funds and grand theft by embezzlement, as well as two misdemeanor counts of petty theft. He was released on a promise to appear in court for his arraignment on Jan. 28 in Department 4 of the West Covina Courthouse.

On Sept. 21, 2024, Garcia conducted a traffic stop, searched the victim’s vehicle, and allegedly stole approximately $600 in cash from the victim’s wallet. He arrested the victim at the conclusion of the stop.On Nov. 23, 2024, Garcia allegedly stole approximately $100 from a passenger’s backpack during a separate traffic stop. The occupants were released with a verbal warning.

On Feb. 8, 2025, the defendant conducted a third traffic stop and searched the victim’s vehicle, allegedly stealing approximately $300 from the vehicle’s center console. The victim was released with a verbal warning.

If convicted as charged, Garcia faces up to four years in state prison and an additional consecutive one-year jail term.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Brandy Chase of the Justice System Integrity Division and is being investigated by the West Covina Police Department.

#FOIAFriday: former El Monte mayor and now prosecutor in the LA City Attorney's office Andre Quintero took an educational trip to Israel on the American Israel Education Foundation's dime. AIEF is part of Israeli lobbying group AIPAC and the trip included meetings with Israeli politicians.
Dear Mr. Quintero,

On behalf of the American Israel Education Foundation (AIEF), we invite you to
participate in the AIEF Solidarity Mission to Israel, January 20-25, 2024. The AIEF Israel
Seminar will depart Saturday, January 20; and return to the United States on Thursday
morning, January 25.

This seminar will delve into the critical issues facing Israel in the wake of the October 7
massacre, including: the ongoing Israel-Hamas war; security threats confronting Israel on
its northern border; and the threat posed by a nuclear Iran.

Participants will hear a wide array of viewpoints, including discussions with: members of
the Israeli Knesset and the Palestinian Authority; U.S. government officials; military
leaders; heads of non-governmental organizations; and prominent academics and
journalists. Throughout the week you will experience firsthand the diversity of Israeli
culture, politics, and society.

If you are an elected or appointed government official, a government employee, or otherwise
subject to local, state or federal ethics rules, we want to ensure that your participation complies
with applicable ethics rules.

Since different jurisdictions have varying policies applicable to privately-sponsored travel,
please consider this invitation conditional upon your obtaining written confirmation from your
ethics authority and/or advisor, on official letterhead, that you may participate in this
educational seminar in Israel. Of course, we will be happy to answer any inquiries from you or
any applicable ethics authority necessary to secure participation in this trip.

We hope that you will be able to join us on what promises to be a rich, insightful, and
educational trip. To confirm your participation, please complete the Participant Confirmation

From Hunter S. Thompson’s ESPN page 2 column one week after 9/11.
We are At War now, according to President Bush, and I take him at his word. He also says this War might last for "a very long time."
Generals and military scholars will tell you that eight or 10 years is actually not such a long time in the span of human history - which is no doubt true - but history also tells us that 10 years of martial law and a wartime economy are going to feel like a Lifetime to people who are in their twenties today. The poor bastards of what will forever be known as Generation Z are doomed to be the first generation of Americans who will grow up with a lower standard of living than their parents enjoyed.
That is extremely heavy news, and it will take a while for it to sink in. The 22 babies born in New York City while the World Trade Center burned will never know what they missed. The last half of the 20th century will seem like a wild party for rich kids, compared to what's coming now. The party's over, folks.

thinkin abt cats+the idea of a cat's love being earned thru trust over time. how that trust is a conversation of will, of space, in space; repeated consideration of care; but above all, over+over, retreating to ur side of the line the moment you realize it's crossed. how a cat asks for nothing else.
