Reading some Stanislaw Lem interviews today and came across this gem of his on the predispositions of writers: “[One must have] a thoughtful and reflexive nature, [a] disregard for the allure of making money, and so on.”

I’ve been not-watching all the Batman movies while editing lately, and while this ridiculous entry has many, many (many) faults, I can’t help but love this truly tragic almost-hero.

A peer reviewed study shows a promising link between flu and shingles vaccines and a reduced risk of dementia. A heroin addict who cut off a raccoon’s penis for “further study” says these vaccines cause autism. For busy Americans, it can be hard to know who to trust.

In 1991, a subatomic particle traveling *just* under the speed of light — and I do mean "just" — slammed into Earth's atmosphere with the energy of a major league basebal pitch! But... where did it come from? And how? A thing I wrote: www.scientificamerican.com/article/wher... 🔭 🧪

Where did the ‘OMG’ particle come from?!
A single subatomic particle from deep space had the same energy as a baseball pitch, and scientists still don’t know how it got here

Nowadays, whenever I have a bout of formless anxiety, I get to play the game of is it the world, is it my life, or is it the perimenopause of it all? The answer is undoubtedly all three, and the solution is to accept I’m anxious, then try to go for a run to tamp the nerves back down

“People read Foucault,” the redoubtable David Brooks once wrote, in an actual column that I’ve all but committed to memory, “and develop an alienated view of the world.” God, did I love this. An “alienated view of the world”! Not by, like, trying to pay rent or having an insurance claim denied—no, no, it was probably the Foucault you read in 2003.
