Reading some Stanislaw Lem interviews today and came across this gem of his on the predispositions of writers: “[One must have] a thoughtful and reflexive nature, [a] disregard for the allure of making money, and so on.”

I’ve been not-watching all the Batman movies while editing lately, and while this ridiculous entry has many, many (many) faults, I can’t help but love this truly tragic almost-hero.

A peer reviewed study shows a promising link between flu and shingles vaccines and a reduced risk of dementia. A heroin addict who cut off a raccoon’s penis for “further study” says these vaccines cause autism. For busy Americans, it can be hard to know who to trust.

In 1991, a subatomic particle traveling *just* under the speed of light — and I do mean "just" — slammed into Earth's atmosphere with the energy of a major league basebal pitch! But... where did it come from? And how? A thing I wrote: www.scientificamerican.com/article/wher... 🔭 🧪

Where did the ‘OMG’ particle come from?!
A single subatomic particle from deep space had the same energy as a baseball pitch, and scientists still don’t know how it got here

Just got back from a Lord of the Rings themed high tea at a tea room here in SD, and I was surprised and pleased to have won this delightful tea (and barrel) at trivia! The 100s of hours spent watching the extended editions whenever I’ve been sick paid off, heh

Nowadays, whenever I have a bout of formless anxiety, I get to play the game of is it the world, is it my life, or is it the perimenopause of it all? The answer is undoubtedly all three, and the solution is to accept I’m anxious, then try to go for a run to tamp the nerves back down

The solution is the same: a societal shift towards the sense of a shared responsibility for our communities. Not that one single man should bootstrap up an entire community. This concludes this “reading way too deeply into a Xmas classic” mini rant for the evening

It reminds me of the criticism once levied at millenials (and now at Gen Z) about how we’re ungrateful for what we have, and we don’t have the futures we were once promised because we didn’t work hard enough and spend our money on avocado toast at brunch or we took too many mental health days.

I’m all for being community-minded and being grateful for what you have, but the idea that not a single person could ever help this poor man take a couple weeks off to see the Parthenon so he could live without profound regrets? Come on

I didn’t see It’s a Wonderful Life before until a few years ago and it just made me mad. Your entire community only produced one kind and competent person (you), therefore you’ll never be able to go to college or take a vacation or do anything for your own happiness? Be grateful! Fuck right off!
