Front cover text:
"WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN AMERICA HAS A DICTATOR?
IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE
A Novel by
SINCLAIR LEWIS"

Background includes an image of a red fasces with a green olive branch.

Back cover text:
"'Vulgar, almost illiterate, a public liar easily detected… He was an actor of genius'

A vain, outlandish, anti-immigrant, fear-mongering demagogue runs for President of the United States – and wins. Sinclair Lewis's chilling 1935 bestseller is the story of Buzz Windrip, who promises poor, angry voters that he will make America proud and prosperous once more, but takes the country down a far darker path. As the new regime slides into authoritarianism, newspaper editor Doremus Jessop can't believe it will last – but is he right? This cautionary tale of liberal complacency in the face of populist tyranny shows it really can happen here."

The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) statement on OpenAI’s October 6 release of mathematical documents just dropped! www.ahmath.org/statements
AHM Statement on OpenAI’s October 6 Release of Mathematical Documents

Yesterday, on October 6th, 2026, OpenAI – which is currently defending lawsuits against accusations of illegal plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution – released a repository of manuscripts purporting to contain solutions to a number of high-profile problems in mathematics.

Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done. The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, from whom OpenAI has claimed to derive its legitimacy, opened their initial advisory statement by saying that frontier AI corporations should not test advanced mathematical problems on internal models. In ignoring the central premise of the Advisory Group’s position, OpenAI has indicated total disregard for the norms of scientific research — norms that guarantee that mathematics remains trustworthy, ethically researched, and in the public interest.

Mathematicians have a particular vision of progress that is informed by history and field-specific considerations. We reject OpenAI's assertion that this release advances our subject, and we urge mathematicians and the public to view the value of this publication model with due skepticism.

Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding.

every single one of these linked processes stems from thinking of education in general, & higher ed in particular, as a resource frontier: a virgin territory or untapped resource of as-yet uncaptured potential wealth that now must be harvested / optimized / extracted. this mindset is our true target

Had a big long thread, but the jist was that these people are learning in faster-than-real-time that pedagogy and management are hard because we fundamentally don't understand why people... people. Because of that, "human-like" or even "superhuman" intelligence will aways be an impossible target.

Find your niche. If you don't like hiking, don't just to have the experience. If you don't especially care about seeing historical landmarks, cool, see the convenient ones. Like trying new foods and dishes? Hit up the restaurants, and find acceptable ways to chill at them.

Your reminder, that many continental European parliaments follow a French tradition that generally sits them in an order from left–right†, where the left sits in the left, the right in the right. That’s why it’s a left–right dichotomy now. The AfD sits in the furthest right-wing of the Bundestag.
Sitting order of the 21st German Bundestag: (from right-of-speak to left-of-speaker)

AfD, CDU/CSU, Bündnis 90/Die Grüne, SPD, die Linke

Extremely sexist and unhinged superficially so-called anti AI people and spaces exist. Probably because loads of sexists exist, but we don't have to tolerate them. Being anti-fascist should be a low bar, and being against sexism isn't difficult to maintain at a community-level unless it's tolerated.
