you hear no news; read no gazettes; extras with startling accounts of commonplaces never delude you into unnecessary excitements; you hear of no domestic afflictions; bankrupt securities; fall of stocks

i experimented today w/ using jev to jam, but i think i really need to rethink my approach. it's really cool, but the naive approach which is "figure out which chord to play and then play it right away" definitely does not work with a 100ms delay

I've been thinking a lot about why video conferencing—particularly Zoom—is terrible for conversation. When I speak with people in person or on the phone, we don't ever talk over each other. It's much easier to read cues about when to speak. But in videoconf, we are always colliding.

I think about Godard's ALPHAVILLE often. Much more often, lately. A movie that certainly was of its time, but also 60 years ahead of it.
A still from Godard's ALPHAVILLE (1965) - The subtitle reads: "I see. People have become slaves to probability."

look its simple: if roger rabbit is exonerated the toons gain control of the acme corporation leading to "coyote vs acme". if roger rabbit is convicted, humans retain control as seen in "looney tunes: back in action". if marvin acme is never killed then chip and dale rescue rangers (2022) happens

I can't speak to the traditional beliefs about it, but I can say that it's a neat reminder of how our brains use context cues like shadows to ground objects in reality. When we experience a moment that doesn't fit our mental model, we 'glitch out' & well... "the sun rests on the brains" FITS.
A yellow construction level has been placed on a sidewalk vertically so that it casts no shadow at Lahaina Noon in Hawaii. From a physic forum.

The "zero shadow" phenomenon is only true for perfectly vertical straight-sided objects, but it's trippy to look at. The State Museum of Natural and Cultural History of Hawai'i ran a contest to come up with a name & landed on 'Lāhainā' which means "cruel sun" in Hawai'ian.
From a physic forum, some hi-vis yellow pedestrian bollards in a parking lot cast no shadow. on the yellow hi-vis non-skid strip outside a grocery store. In the background is a hauler truck and an SUV.

Subsolar points are where the sun's parallel rays hit the Earth at exactly 90° at its zenith. Because of the axial tilt of the Earth, it travels around the tropics in a zig-zag pattern, passing each point twice a year.
The subsolar point at Honolulu during Lahaina Noon with the range of possible subsolar points shaded in pink – the angle between the Sun and the local horizontal level is exactly 90° at the subsolar point

Twice a year, Hawai'i experiences a strange moment where the sun appears to be exactly overhead & anything that is completely vertical casts no shadow. Let's learn about Lāhainā Noon, subsolar points & 'Kau ka lā i ka lolo', meaning "the sun rests on the brains."
From a Reddit forum, a photo of a can of coconut milk with a blue label, papyrus text and a flip-top, on a sidewalk. It seems to hover because there's no visible shadow. The pavement is sort of unevenly colored, with bright spots, and the grass along it is green and lush.

it’s so wild that the thesis for the AI bubble is that 27B param models are good enough to do all menial office labor, and once the data centers are built moore’s law will just…stop. 10 trillion dollars to build warehouses full of compute that will run on your iphone for free by 2030.
