i experimented today w/ using jev to jam, but i think i really need to rethink my approach. it's really cool, but the naive approach which is "figure out which chord to play and then play it right away" definitely does not work with a 100ms delay

I think about Godard's ALPHAVILLE often. Much more often, lately. A movie that certainly was of its time, but also 60 years ahead of it.
A still from Godard's ALPHAVILLE (1965) - The subtitle reads: "I see. People have become slaves to probability."

Incredible how these patent applications capture the alienation these glasses surely cause
Fig 5c from Meta’s facial recognition patent. It shows a man viewing a party as if on a movie screen, the glasses highlight everyone else having fun.

The man’s posture is neutral, but expectant. His left arm barely reaching toward the others. He is wearing Meta smart glasses. No one else at the party is wearing Meta smart glasses. He hesitates to join the fun.

He’s at the party, but somehow alienated from it. I’ve added text above his head: “They don’t know I work at Meta.”

problematic dude, but Feynman wrote about this in his autobiography. once they got computers, researchers would screw around on them because it was fun and addictive but they didn’t get much done.
A page from “Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynmann,” that says:

Well, Mr. Frankel, who started this program, began to suffer from the computer disease that anybody who works with computers now knows about. It's a very serious disease and it interferes completely with the work. The trouble with computers is you play with them. They are so wonderful. You have these switches—if it's an even number you do this, if it's an odd number you do that—and pretty soon you can do more and more elaborate things if you are clever enough, on one machine.

After a while the whole system broke down. Frankel wasn't paying any attention; he wasn't supervising anybody. The system was going very, very slowly–while he was sitting in a room figuring out how to make one tabulator automatically print arctangent X, and then it would start and it would print columns and then bitsi, bitsi, bitsi, and calculate the arc-tangent automatically by integrating as it went along and make a whole table in one operation.

Absolutely useless. We had tables of arc-tangents. But if You've ever worked with computers, you understand the disease. The delight in being able to see how much you can do. But he got the disease for the first time, the poor fellow who invented the thing.

At Costco, I saw—but did not buy—this bottle of…cognac?
A front cut display box of a bottle of liquor that is shaped like a perched eagle. The box is red, gold and purple. It says “PATRIOT EAGLE: THE COLLECTION” on top of the cutout and “AGED 6 YEARS” below the cutout.

It is unclear from the box or bottle what kind of liquor the bottle contains.

i’m at #pyconus for the first time in many years and it’s at the long beach convention center and i’m having a lovely time and i’m grateful to the organizers, the attendees and the venue, BUT what is up with these chairs?
an egg shaped chair, covered in fuzzy upholstery. amazing.a high backed blue velour chair on a sparkly rug, in front of a sparkly wall, next to a large potted planttwo high backed chairs, upholstered in what appears to be red latex, placed in front of a giant mural sized painting of a red rose, complete with a golden ornate frame

“Most of all, Dr. Karp has made clear his commitment to reinvigorating his direct engagement with Hobbits and this discussion endeavors to model the form of rigorous dialogue that should be at the center of Palantir’s prized culture.”

try true inner liberation
A picture from a book of a poster that says “run away to sea” and a caption that reads “Many people may want some change from a containing pattern of life; but the freedom gained by travel (urged by the “run away to sea” poster) is no substitute for a true inner liberation.

i canceled my subscription today because of your craven decision to avoid endorsing a candidate in this important election. if your ownership cannot take the heat that good journalism sometimes requires they should sell the paper to someone who can.
