Yea connecting collections is so important. I also work with institutional archives & we have a system that means you can search almost every public higher ed archive in FLsimultaneously on one page. But community archives don’t get slotted into those systems at all, you have to just KNOW about them

But what do you do if you don’t have that community already existing to be educated? By the time you’ve used the grant to build up the community, the grant period is over and then what?
010
Mþ. Kestrel 🏳️‍⚧️♿️📚 @kestrelsward.bsky.social · 4h
Yes exactly! The feast or famine thing is so important to think about. We tried to write into our grant a way to make this grant’s value outlast our ability to employ an archivist by making sure we’re also passing along KNOWLEDGE, but we have a built in community of interested ppl already.
120
Mþ. Kestrel 🏳️‍⚧️♿️📚 @kestrelsward.bsky.social · 4h
And the passing along of the knowledge is what will make this sustainable, giving more hands to the archival work in a way that the data can then be shared with other professionals (instead of the very discombobulated metadata we have now).
120
Mþ. Kestrel 🏳️‍⚧️♿️📚 @kestrelsward.bsky.social · 4h
This would not work very well because the main thing the grant is paying for is for an experienced archivist’s time to teach, and paying for the volunteers’ time to learn & practice. Sure some of us are doing it for free for love of the game, but not everyone has that freedom.
120
Mþ. Kestrel 🏳️‍⚧️♿️📚 @kestrelsward.bsky.social · 4h
Yes! But we also need more archivists educating and empowering communities to do their own archiving. Currently running a grant right now with a local community archive, a big factor of which is educating our existing volunteer base on how to manage the collections. But w/out grant

We saw this sort of fervor play out over Haitian immigrants. It started from a bunch of racist rumors on FB, then spread to twitter, and driven by the right including Vance. Vance deliberately lied about that community and a few years later you get to 350,000 Haitian TPS immigrants losing status.

And it’s dumb as hell. Every single progressive leader is a fallible human being. They are going to have issues they’re not good on. They’re going to make choices we don’t agree with because they think it’s the right way to move us forward. And we have GOT to stop cannibalizing anyone not perfect.

It’s too too common to have someone on the left say something like “sure that person did something groundbreaking breaking but they had problematic opinions on X, so we should never listen to them, or build on the things they were right about or acknowledge them as making progress”
100
Mþ. Kestrel 🏳️‍⚧️♿️📚 @kestrelsward.bsky.social · 5h
Ok but this is something that I think a LOT more people on the left need to learn and internalize: the ability to say “hey, you were ground breaking & amazing but I don’t agree with everything you ever did, so now I’m here to try to do better” without denouncing an imperfect human as Evil or Failed.

In addition to the broader literacy crisis, we're also in a power literacy crisis. Many folks deeply misunderstand how political power works, who has it, and how to build it. And all of that is happening while more folks are using the language of organizing without grasping its most basic tenets.

If you’re first reaction to someone attacking disability benefits is to say “but some of them work” then you’re basically saying “if they can’t work then yes it’s fine to attack them” and I’m tired of pretending that’s not the direct implication of people who do this.
