I made a zine for Geek Weekly Fanzines’ “USA at 250” minizine project! I was assigned the year 1864, and I opted to highlight some historical facts/events that I was not familiar with when I began this project. I hope you learn something, too!

I learned about a new (to me) awful human being: Scott Yenor works for the Heritage Foundation, so ‘nuff said, I suppose… but I’ll go on: Yenor described “independent women” as “medicated, meddlesome, and quarrelsome” in 2021 (according to Snopes).

It’s very simple and it’s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.

Analog collage! Made from old Martha Stewart magazines, plus a lil Vogue. The original text asked whether your thyroid is making you depressed, but I look around right now and don’t see a lot that makes me NOT feel depressed, so I wanted to play on that.
A light brown horse with dark brown spots is collaged atop a bed of red flowers in the shape of human lips and white flowers in the background, with the text “could your goose bumps be making you depressed?”

As a university librarian, a week doesn’t go by without AI coming up in conversation with coworkers. This past week, I was frustrated to see AI use being accepted in a hobbyist printmaker group. So I made this original linocut print! Check insta for process videos & Juliesetele.com for a free zine
Two linocut prints of a block that says:
“100% human*”
“plus cat hair and dust”
“soulful”
“real”
“comrade”
“imperfect”
The print is a gradient of blue (which looks green), purple, and pink.Carved linocut block on a green self-healing cutting mat. The block is battleship grey linoleum, stained pink. A Flexcut carving tool and linoleum shavings are also visible.Cover of a minizine: “AI is very bad, actually: A manifesto.” Image shows a wrench being thrown into interlocking gears.

I need to experiment a bit to get the background more solidly inked, but I’m very pleased with this first print I pulled from my Christina Hammock Koch linocut portrait block. This involved playing with letting the light in, since in linocut you carve away what you want to remain light.
