Stop telling me to wear bright colours when walking or biking around. It’s fucking madness that this is a thing let alone normalized - we have vehicles that are murdered out and weigh over 6000 pounds then you scold me for wearing black - “he really had it coming, doesn’t he know about road safety”

I'm looking forward to seeing you lot when you come to visit Oxford! Thought I'd share this post from Facebook, thoughts on Oxford's 'War on Motorists'..
Facebook post...

The “war on motorists” has to be one of the most fragile, overdramatic phrases in modern public debate. Apparently, asking people not to park on pavements, so wheelchair users, parents with prams, and elderly people can actually pass, is a “war.” Making roads safer so fewer people are killed or seriously injured is a “war.” Adding cycling infrastructure so people have a choice beyond sitting in traffic is a “war.” Reducing speed limits in residential areas so children don’t die is a “war.” It’s absolutely absurd. The vast majority of public space is given over to car drivers. Roads, parking bays, multistorey car parks and retail parks built entirely around driving. The idea that drivers are somehow an oppressed group is detached from reality. What’s actually happening isn’t a war on cars, it’s a slow, long overdue correction, after decades of designing everything around one mode of transport, at the expense of all others.
Being asked to drive a bit slower, being asked not to block the pavement and being asked to share space.
That’s not oppression, that’s living in a society with other people.

We also need to have a more honest conversation about how driving, no matter how useful to the person doing it, imposes harms onto other people. Until we try to reduce those harms as much as possible, it’s not clear how we’re going to take the steps needed to create a safer, healthier country 8/10

Fuel duty had been frozen for 15 consecutive years and is now, in real terms, lower than it was 2010. Driving remains cheaper than using public transport - despite the harm it does to environment and society.

I've had such a crap commute this morning, that I've written to my MP and Councillor. I'm just a bloke trying to get to work, and I want to go home to my kids at the end of the day. Our road culture is fundamentally broken. cc @liamthorp.bsky.social
Dear Maria,
I am one of your constituents (Postcode: ).
In the interests of transparency, in my professional life, I am an academic at the University of Liverpool with research interests in Active Travel. However, I am writing to you as a resident.
The reason that I am writing is that I have had 3 incidents in the last 24 hours whilst riding my bike to and from work which have been really upsetting. All happened in broad daylight, and all involved drivers nearly crashing into me as if I wasn’t there.
It is the last of these incidents, which happened just now which is most upsetting. The driver ‘close passed’ me against a line of parked cars. This gave me three options: 1) Ride into the back of a parked car. 2) Get run over by his car. 3) Stop entirely. The advantage gained by the driver was such that we were both stopped at the next set of traffic lights. At that point he told me to “get off the ****ing road”.
This led me to believe that the driver intended to drive like that.
As much as I ride a bike to work, I am a normal person. I have two young children. I go to work every day, work hard, and pay my taxes. I am sure that if I met this person in any other walk of life, we might have a perfectly decent interaction.
However, the culture on our roads has become so bad that we forget these things.
I recognise some of the good things that are happening, both at a Government level, and in Liverpool via the City Council and CA. However, the thing that is missing is the culture shift. Things like the recent changes to the Highway Code are welcome, but they are not filtering through to attitudes on the road.
Please could I implore you to raise issues like mine with the Department for Transport? Things like the “Think!” campaign have raised awareness of so many other issues.
I do not want to be an obituary in the Echo. Worse yet, I don’t want to be just another Killed and Serious Injured statistic.
I’m sorry I have to write in such a sad way – I love riding …
