As a 6 foot 7 chap, I tend to avoid initiating conversations about height. There's plenty of other things I'd prefer to talk about. But thanks for noticing, yes, I'm tall thanks. How are you doing today?

The problem here has nothing to do with solar power. The problem is dedicating huge urban areas to car parking. Resulting in urban sprawl, more roads, fewer homes, car dependant suburbs. 'Better' car parks aren't going to solve the problems caused by creating car first towns and cities

Hi @emilykerr36.bsky.social is this anything you can help with please? This is the new, purpose build cycle track / NCN5 at Sanford Lane, towards Oxford. A new, unnecessary, sign has been put up stating that you shouldn't cycle on it. Are you in a position to help to remove this sign?

It's a point I've been trying to make for a long time: there is no good way to meet even 10% of current demand for animal products. They trash the living world, whichever way you do it. If you want to reduce your impact, switch to a plant-based diet. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Given their aims 'Open Roads' has always been an oxymoron. Their vision of an open road was always more akin to the second picture. Open to, and dominated by cars. Imagine spending you time, and personal fortune campaigning for a car first Oxford!

I was perhaps unreasonably, delighted to have come across the 'Except Cycles' sign. However, these signs must be in short supply as the 'Except Cycles' addition was only to be found at one end 😎 @nathanley.com
Two road signs. One for a diversion. The other is a Road Closed sign, with Except Cycles, printed underneath

Competitor at a charity sports day held at London's Herne Hill Velodrome, in which tradesmen had to carry half-bushel baskets as they cycled around the track. September 7, 1938
A person rides a bicycle on a track. The bicycle has a smaller front wheel to accommodate a large rack, which contains a basket. There are also baskets under the rider's arm, in his hand, and on his hand. There are many people watching from the sidelines.

It's my own fault for looking at Twitter. 'I don't have a problem with trans people, it's trans activists who are the problem' 'I don't have a problem with people of colour, it's civil rights campaigners who are the problem' '...It's the people campaigning for safer and more accessible streets'
Snip of a Tweet from John Stewart.

"What I have a problem with is not cycling or most cyclists but with many cycle activists and their lobby groups."

German soldiers with rifles confiscate bicycles in front of the Royal Palace on Dam Square, Amsterdam, early April 1945 (see ALT-text for more info) 📷Ad Windig
Photo from a book called De Ondergedoken Camera (The Underground Camera), which comprises photos taken secretly by Dutch photographers during the later stages of WWII. The photo shows a crowd of people, some in uniform, others in civilian clothes, with bicycles in front of a large building.

A caption with the photo says, "Amsterdam, early April 1945. Several bicycle raids took place. The requisitioned bicycles were intended for recently arrived German units in the city. Ad Windig photographed the confiscation of bicycles in front of the Royal Palace on Dam Square. 'German soldiers with rifles rounded up the people and told them where to go to hand over their bicycles. I took the photo from Peek and Cloppenburg. There was a wonderful overview there.' 160 Ad Windig, MAI."

The best thing about Chipping Norton at Christmas is the Henry nativity scene.
A shop window with a nativity scene using Henry vacuum cleaners as the characters. There is straw on the ground, the Henrys are wearing headscarves, and they're in a stable with Christmas lights.
