Been said by better than me, but the ongoing debate around immigration, language and culture here continues to erase First Nations presence, history, and culture. This continent has been multilingual and multinational for far, far longer than it's been a settler colony.

A classical dancer and a martial artist discuss how their art relates to their work as surgeons! Come and join me and David O'Regan next Monday 19th Oct at 2100 Malaysia time (=2300 AEDT, midnight AEST, 1400 BST). Hosted on the Echo platform- register here- iecho.org/hub/ORG17422...?
Rhea dancing in a hotel roomWhat can surgery learn from the ballet studio-and the dojo?

Join BBASS on 19 October 2026 at 2100 hrs Malaysiatime (GMT+8) for a special session with Associate Professor Rhea Liang: surgeon, medical educator, systems-change leader- and
practising ballerina.

Using the mirror as both a practical tool and a metaphor, we will explore posture, ergonomics and the physical demands of operating while asking how reflection-in action and on action- can help us recognise, correct and continually improve our practice.

Rhea will also reflect on the
realities of a career as a woman in surgery, the prejudice and barriers she has faced, and what must change to build a more equitable, respectful and inclusive surgical culture.

The Kouk makes a great point here. Productivity in human services is extremely hard to measure; the class sizes for teachers example is a great one. Universities have been cramming more students into their classes for years — learning has declined — is that better ‘productivity’?

🚨 New report from the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare on mortality rates of working-age welfare recipients between 2012-2022 makes for grim reading, could be hugely improved tomorrow by raising rates as per the Government's own committee. @aihw.bsky.social www.aihw.gov.au/reports/cent...
Key findings

Of the 287,000 people aged 22-64 who died over 2012-2022, almost 3 in 5 people received income support payments

Coronary heart disease was the leading cause of death among income support recipients

Income support recipients were overrepresented in deaths from suicide, accidental poisoning, and alcoholic liver disease

Mortality rates and leading causes of death differed depending on the type of payment received

Are we getting too good at managing homelessness?
Australia’s homelessness response has become increasingly sophisticated, but emergency accommodation and outreach cannot substitute for a home. The focus must shift towards prevention, permanent housing and addressing the systems that push people into homelessness in the first place.

This scandal is not going away, no matter how long the government tries to bury it. Abolish "mutual" obligations. Design a high quality, voluntary, public sector employment service with welfare recipients in a leading role. Simple.
ABOLISH.
MUTUAL.
OBLIGATIONS.
It will never be possible to protect the safety and wellbeing of people in poverty while compulsory activities remain.

Many concerns about the lawfulness of "mutual" obligations penalties remain, including the use of payment suspensions, which were never paused while the system was under investigation.
The Antipoverty Centre, ACOSS, Economic Justice Australia and NATSILS are calling on the government to:
1. Remove the Targeted Compliance Framework immediately, including payment suspensions and financial penalties.
2. Provide full back-pay and compensation to every person affected by unlawful decisions.

Today we have issued a joint statement with the other members of the reference group that the government convened in response to the discovery of unlawful welfare administration. You can read more on The Point: live.thepoint.com.au/2026/08/the-...
Last week the government announced its plan to restart some payment cancellations and suspensions that are applied to Centrelink recipients, which were found to operate unlawfully.
Members of DEW's Targeted Compliance Framework Reference Group - which was established after the government discovered its unlawful administration - strongly oppose compulsory activities for people on Centrelink payments.
We are calling on the Government to abandon its recently announced plan to restart some payment cancellations and suspensions, and stop the penalty system entirely.
