I too would like clear rules and priorities. Maybe even some data to back up those things! Sadly, culture war topics and shrinking science seem to be the only clear objectives these days. @aniloza.bsky.social @kaytesb.bsky.social
She is not alone. Thirty-two percent of STAT survey respondents said the grant programs, or "requests for applications," under which they were funded had been terminated over the past year, and 41% said they have shifted priorities to be more aligned with the administration. This has been difficult, however, because of the lack of funding notices, Spector-Bagdady said. "It's frustrating as a scientist to not only have to try to pull together cutting-edge, fundable science, but also try to navigate these tensions without having any clear direction on how to do so, she said. "I'm a lawyer. I like rules. I like following the rules, but I don't know what the rules are."

Grants that were scored very competitively by peer reviewers now amount to a coin flip. This reality is harsher for early career folks and those on soft money positions, incl @kaytesb.bsky.social Chart by @jaspar.bsky.social 👇
Bar chart showing the odds of a grant ranked in the top 10% will be funded, from 2015 to 2025. Odds fall from consistently being ~90% to 56% in 2026.

The likelihood of snagging NIH grants has plunged to historic lows, forcing academic researchers to resort to a variety of tactics to try to obtain funding

Walmart makes BILLIONS on SNAP spending while being one of the top employers of SNAP benefit participants. So a mega corporation doesn’t pay employees enough to eat, saving BILLIONS only to go on to make BILLIONS when those employees spend tax payer funded SNAP benefits at Walmart. Cool cool.

I like this. Since under RFK Jr, Covid shots are now for people with underlying conditions that put them at risk, Michigan’s chief medical executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian states that not having the most recent Covid shot constitutes such an underlying condition. www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/inside...
In her recommendation, Bagdasarian stated,
"Any person over the age of six months without contraindication who has not received a dose of a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved or-authorized 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccine may be considered to have an underlying condition that puts them at high risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19 and is thus eligible to receive an age-appropriate dose."
