A personal story about that phrase “young men of fighting age” applied to asylum seekers. As many of you know I took in a young Ukrainian woman under the Homes for Ukraine scheme. As part of that process, soon after she arrived we were visited by the local authority rep and a Fire Brigade rep.

Around 180 residents marched in Oxford in support of trans rights today, following the government’s latest draft code of practice from the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Opponents have called the guidance ‘unworkable’ and say it amounts to an attack on trans and non binary people.
Gathering in Bonn Square for trans rights. you can see many pink and blue placards in attendance.

The Oxfam Bookshop on St Giles’, Britain’s first, has earned a reprieve. Oxford City Council has refused permission for landlords Regent’s Park College to turn it into a graduate common room, pointing out that the Local Plan prioritises retail, entertainment, and office uses in the city centre.

I know a lot of people are boycotting Amazon, which is great, but it's hurting a lot of trans authors. Trans authors: Drop links to your NON-AMAZON book listings/storefronts. Cis people: Repost, boost, and, importantly, buy. Part of boycotting an evil corporation is supporting the alternatives.

A graphic with a turquoise background, with abstract shapes impinging from the sides in dark blue and white. The white letters on the background reads The Carnegies Medal for Writing Longlist 2025 #Carnegies2025 / Carnegies.co.uk. In the middle of the graphic is the front cover of the book 'Island of Whispers' by Frances Hardinge and Emiliy Gravett. The lowest part of the cover shows two boats approaching an ominously silhouetted island crested by a broken tower. One boat is small with white sails and a horse-head figurehead. The other is larger, an intimidating silhouette. The upper part of the cover is midnight blue and is covered by swarms of pale, fluttering moths.
