This is a good list. The #1 biggest problem in Title IX is that there is no oversight and massive conflicts of interest. Schools can (and do) prioritize the institution over survivors, even when it requires breaking the law. Independent investigations would change that.

This is another attack on the so-called "feminization" of higher education, abetted by widespread ideology (also held by far too many uni leaders) that education has no value beyond a taxpayer-subsidized job training program for corporations. Also part of effort to resegregate higher education.

But the actual problem is not who gets the golden ticket this year, but rather why a socially vital sector (do we not think knowledge, about society and about nature, is valuable?) has been eviscerated to the point where a steady job teaching and doing research is a golden ticket in the first place.

But academia itself has a similar (not identical; but maybe related) problem. There are a few stars, and a larger handful of people privileged with secure senior positions. And there is a sea of casual labour. But there is less and less of a middle where people can make real careers by solid work.

I started translating the announcement into plain English, but got too depressed to continue before I even reached the most pernicious parts in the "full letter" linked.
Dear Colleagues,
The U.S. National Science Foundation was established in 1950 to keep American discovery at the frontier. That mission has not changed. But the political landscape has. So it all ends. Now.
We've heard this message clearly from researchers across disciplines and settings. Science today is no longer a straight line from laboratory to application. We aim to cause maximal harm to universities by diverting funds elsewhere. Rather than investing public funding to generate massive positive externalities, we prefer allowing billionaires to set the scientific rese agenda . Someone—you’ll never guess who—convinced us to pour what money we do spend into AI.
To meet this moment, NSF is embracing a portfolio approach, where much more of our funding can be diverted to industry. We are expanding who carries out NSF-supported work and how, to enable ambitious, multidisciplinary inquiry at the scientific frontier, where frontier is defined as what we want to fund. We will find and support exceptional students and early-career researchers, at the stage when research creativity is high, so long as they US citizens of the right kind. Our new Office of Metascience will implement unproven methods to make a show of assessing the effectiveness of new initiatives, and more importantly will leverage that Gold Standard Science bullshit to eliminate programs in geosciences, basic biology, all aspects of social science, and anything else that makes the Christian right uncomfortable.
We’e already pretty much gutted the entire agency. Funding is at a near stand-still, and the agency has become unresponsive to researchers to a degree that was unimaginable only two years ago. We know none of this succeeds without you, NSF's staff, reviewers, awardees, students, and partners across academia and industry. NSF's role is to create conditions for exceptional science to happen more often and more frequently. We are redoubling our commitment to do so through these efforts.

One thing I wanted to say at the time but couldn’t find the strength: regular people have no idea how academics publish books. We rarely have editorial or fact-checking support or services. Academic stars — overwhelming white men — get those resources but we almost never do.

This is very good advice, even if the true problem is at the cultural and systemic level rather than at the individual level. We write too much because academic culture and system value quantity over quality. And this quantity clogs the system, further weakening the quality.

Insta-Famous or Invisible: Social Media Use and Belonging at a Public Flagship University - Qualitative Sociology
Social media and US public universities hold as-yet-unrealized potential for equity. Both institutions, however, also serve as reminders of social inequality while normalizing relatively privileged lifestyles. Past scholarship highlights how symbolic capital, felt stigma, and self-inflicted symbolic violence can maintain inequality, yet their operation across interconnected digital and higher educational contexts remains under-analyzed. Through 51 interviews with students at a US public flagship university, I investigate how social media use impacts perceived inequality in higher education. Social media—particularly image-centric platforms prompting users to share visual representations of their offline lives—more readily aided the accumulation of symbolic capital and digital prestige among students better equipped to emulate culturally dominant lifestyle content through proximity to hegemonic norms. The same platforms more readily amplified exposure to felt stigma and experiences with digital non-recognition among students distanced from these norms. Students experiencing felt stigma could exhibit learned invalidation, considering their lives unworthy of certain forms of digital documentation. Further, women students faced greater pressure to document their lives through image-centric platforms. I highlight a cross-institutional context where digital comparisons intertwine with access to perceived-vital resources for social integration and upward mobility, revealing digital platforms’ potential to intensify unequal experiences in higher education
