Popular Music Books In Process update. HMU if you wanna join the team or present work in 2027.
Popular Music Books in Process series, 2026-2027:
Call for Proposals and for New Co-Organizers

Since 2020, the Popular Music Books in Process series has held online
events for music writers and scholars to bring recent books or works in
progress to an engaged community. PMBiP is a collaboration between the Journal of Popular Music Studies, the Pop Conference, and IASPM-US. There have been more than 160 Zoom events so far, almost all preserved on YouTube. The recordings are also being archived at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame for educational purposes.

This year, Eric Weisbard is retiring from leading the series. Antonia
Randolph, Kimberly Mack, Francesca Royster, and Gus Sadler are also
stepping back. We thank them for all their work in selecting and scheduling authors, guiding presenters, cultivating audiences, participating in sessions, and posting videos.

Elena Razlogova, Alyxandra Vesey, and Carl Wilson are staying on. We are currently looking for a few new people to join us as co-organizers to keep PMBiP alive and growing. We welcome critics, researchers, and authors both inside and outside academia. The time commitment is not much more than three to four hours a month in season, plus a couple of off-season online meetings. If you would like to join us, or to suggest someone else you know with the skills and interest to be part of the group, please email alyx.vesey@gmail.com as soon as possible, at the latest by Monday, Oct. 5.Meanwhile, we are on a semi-hiatus. We will have a few events in the fall
that are held over from last season, all on Tuesdays at 5 pm:

Nov 10: Jessica Holmes, Music at the Margins of Sense (University of
Michigan Press) with Anabel Maler, Seeing Voices: Analyzing Sign
Language Music (Oxford University Press)
Dec 8: Karl Hagstrom Miller, Amateurs Make American Pop Music: A
History (Duke University Press, forthcoming)
TBA: Eric Lott, Pleasant Valley Sunday (Duke Singles Series, in progress)
We will return to a more regular schedule in early 2027. We are now seeking proposals for that new season. If you have a new book or one publishing in the next year, or have work in progress you want to showcase for feedback, please let us know.Sessions last between 60 and 90 minutes. All kinds of formats are welcome, from readings and dialogues to roundtables, always including a generous Q&A. Some authors have even incorporated live music. Unfortunately we can’t play music recordings or videos due to YouTube’s draconian restrictions, but visual displays are more than welcome. We ask you to make your event conversational on some level and to avoid longer solo presentations.You are encouraged to propose co-presenters or interlocutors, or we can help arrange them. We may suggest combining authors whose topics or approaches seem compatible. Our YouTube page shows the variety of strategies presenters have used.
Whatever the format, our focus remains books, whether early in gestation or after publication. We want to highlight popular music writing of many kinds, whether scholarly, mass-market, personal, or hybrid, keeping our communities connected, and welcoming in new participants. Presenters are asked to do their best to attend several other sessions through the season, to get a feel for the series and also to support it. Please feel free to share this call with others you think might want to join in.For early 2027 and beyond, email to all seven co-organizers by October 1:

-A proposal of about 300 words describing the book or books that you would like to present, along with your preferred presentation format;
-A bio of up to 100 words for each participant;
-An indication of when would be best for you. Specific months or even a few specific dates are encouraged. The exact time for winter-spring sessions is still to be determined, but it will be circa Monday-Wednesday, 5 pm to 5:30 pm ET.

Thank you!

American media outlets are mystified by political speech. These stories that show Dolly Parton was never political miss that she was definitively political She never endorsed candidates or took sides in PARTY politics. She lived her life supporting and defending the downtrodden, that is political!

As we require more people to have bachelor's degrees, capital expects universities to train their workers. At the same time, capitalists fight funding universities. Professors are unequipped for training workers to perform for capital. Somehow it becomes all our fault
