My hottest “I have no data to back this up” take is that phones aren’t making young people less happy. What’s making them less happy is living in a world where everyone is having their reality defined by recommendation algorithms that can only care about whether something keeps you watching.
Young adult happiness is falling. Percent of young people who are pretty or very happy has dropped from 88% to 76% over the last 15 years after having held fairly steady between 1980 and 2010

Swalwell is not fit for public office, and saying so isn't the same thing as convicting him of a crime. Same with Platner. Publicly available information corroborated by witnesses disqualifies both men. Public servants need to be intelligent, compassionate, and unselfish.

Some pushback on The Pitt is a sign of good media literacy. Gilligan's Island only aired 1 season on NickatNite. Editing didnt flag the anachronistic ref. Part of the youthful SM pushback is how random Gilligan is, and the heavy handed writing portraying every doctor as ER incompetent and a mess irl

Because Noah Wiley turned an ensemble show into a show about himself. imho The intrinsic medical victories that sustained the drama of Season One are gone. Season Two is polemic for the failure of doctors, and Shakespearian posturing.

Denmark didn’t “transition” its grid—it replaced it. ~15% → 92% renewable electricity in 25 years. Wind did the heavy lifting. Solar is scaling. Interconnection balanced. Flexibility solved variability. Wind built it. Solar is scaling. Fossil lost it. This IS system replacement. ⚡#Bettrification

This! is the danger of allowing corporations to license rather than sell you books and media. Digital ownership rights (of software, music, movies, books) must equal the ownership rights granted to buyers of physical media before the internet. (we're working on this at @flaminghydra.com)

Whoa 🤯 The Moon, in full eclipse, with the #Artemis II Orion spacecraft. Part of the Moon and spacecraft are lit by Earthshine, and both Saturn and Mars are visible to the lower right. Incredible. Details: images.nasa.gov/details/art0...
[alt text by NASA] The Moon, seen here backlit by the Sun during a solar eclipse on April 6, 2026, is photographed by one of the cameras on the Orion spacecraft’s solar array wings. Orion is visible in the foreground on the left. Earth is reflecting sunlight at the left edge of the Moon, which is slightly brighter than the rest of the disk. The bright spot visible just below the Moon’s bottom right edge is Saturn. Beyond that, the bright spot at the right edge of the image is Mars. Credit: NASA

Asking a journalist: can a mentally incapacitated person make a “gut decision” She’s a co-conspirator. Gaslighting that anything about this is rational or reasoned.
This was a gut decision. One underestimated thing about Trump is that he is more hawkish than his advisers on Iran. Many in the "America First" movement ignored Trump's record of aggressive policy toward Iran. And his feelings only deepened after his first term when Iran plotted to kill him.

Some inspiring words on cinema in the streaming era from the Pope. Yes, THAT Pope.
The logic of algorithms tends to repeat what “works,” but art opens up what is possible. Not everything has to be immediate or predictable. Defend slowness when it serves a purpose, silence when it speaks and difference when evocative. Beauty is not just a means of escape; it is above all an invocation. When cinema is authentic, it does not merely console, but challenges. It articulates the questions that dwell within us, and sometimes, even provokes tears that we did not know we needed to express.

Great piece by Zadie Smith. When the right talks about classics or "Western" culture, these works are only important to the extent that it demonstrates their superiority, they have no interest in art in and of itself beyond that www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
You know a country by its values. By what a country values. And it turns out that what a country values can change over time. Sometimes, though, there’s a sort of cognitive delay between the country you think you are in, and the country you’ve actually become. For example, you can keep selling yourself, to foreigners, as the country of William Shakespeare and Jane Austen, and luring busloads of tourists to Stratford-upon-Avon and Bath, and put a statue of George Orwell in front of the BBC, and imagine yourself a cultured and literate nation, which the rest of the world admires for its devotion to the written word – but if you then chronically underfund your cultural institutions, and treat your cultural workers with contempt, many people will suspect you of being full of it. And as the decades pass – and fewer and fewer Shakespeares and Austens and Orwells emerge from your little island – even more people will begin to suspect that in truth you do not value culture at all, and are in fact running a giant heritage museum in which the only cultural workers you respect are the dead ones.

email addressed from the deceased writer, Michael Crichton: Hi,
I’m Michael Crichton. Most days, I’m chasing stories some take off, others vanish before I can catch them. Writing can be a lonely job, but it’s also how I connect, how I make sense of everything around me.

I’d love to hear about your work what drives you, what keeps you pushing forward when it gets tough, how you stay in motion. There’s a lot we can learn from each other’s journeys. Best, Michael
