2. Don't criticize their choices. Whatever they're reading - comics, fan fiction, non-fiction, even books by celebrity writers whom you may have good reason to dislike - let them read. Books with problematic content? Use them as an opportunity for discussion. But don't shut down their reading.

1. Make sure you're doing it yourself. Kids read most readily when parents read. Seeing the adults around them reading, hearing them talk about what they're reading, is often the best way to engage their interest.

Happy 90th to Jim Henson (posthumous). It’s safe to say that he as someone whose lifetime scarcely overlapped with mine did more to shape my worldview than many of the adults in my immediate life. Be kind, sing songs, be a little weird, make someone wonder how you did that today.

Humaning.
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, a Northern Cardinal and American Goldfinch perch above a busy crowd in a city, looking down. The cardinal says "It's a nice day to go humaning." The goldfinch says "Just look at them. Majestic." In panel 2, a close-up of the two birds. The cardinal says "Nobody tells you that you'll reach a certain age and suddenly get into humaning. I hit 3 years old, and then bam."The birds are looking out over the crowd scene. In panel 3, the cardinal says "Their calls sound funny to us, but each one has a unique meaning." Below, people are saying various things: "I'm tired." "Where's my phone?" "I'd murder a burrito." In panel 4, the birds look down excitedly at a man walking by. The cardinal says "Wait, is that a guy who got dressed in the dark and put his shirt on inside out and backwards?" And the goldfinch exclaims, "Holy... that's a lifer!"

I love summer, and I hate the change of seasons. But eels change in excellent ways, so let's talk about that, instead! That's right, friends...it's Big Eel Life Cycle Thread time! Before we start, let's remember that I'm a historian, not a scientist. But I'll do my best. 1/11 🗃️🧪
Meme. Drawing of the eels' life cycle, surrounding a map of their migration range, centered on the mid-Atlantic. The drawing shows the evolution cycle:
1. Silver eels spawning
2. Eggs
3. Larval stage
4. Glass eel
5. Elvers
6. Yellow eel
7. Silver eel

The inconsistency in singular/plural drives me a little crazy, because it suggests that eels shift from being multiple animals to one animal and back several times over their lives. Which is silly. Nobody does that. Not even my neighbors, who might be werewolves.

Meme text reads:
"There's history in here somewhere"
