Had a good time at (Pirate) Caption comic festival - one of the only non-capitalist motivated comic cons in the UK (as pointed out by @karriefransman.bsky.social ). Exhausted now. Will write more about it at some point. Well done to the committee. Lovely to see old friends & make new ones.

Cover art for a short comic: “Think Syphilis” as the title in squiggly text, with text in bottom right corner saying “written by Danielle Jayes” and “art by Vicky Yuh”. “Treppi” the Bacterium Treponema Pallidum character is wriggling all around the figures of an old painting called "A Rake's Progress: 3 – The Orgy” by William Hogarth.Comic Page 1: "Treppi" the syphilis bacterium introduces itself, sat on old newspapers, in front of a backdrop of older paintings that represent or are tied to syphilis/disease. Medical students discuss rising syphilis cases. There is text throughout the page explaining that syphilis can show up in different ways and in various health settings, not just in sexual health settings.Comic Page 2: Female character visits a dermatology clinic and is seen for a rash on her palms. The doctor says it looks like eczema. She also visits the dentist for the lesions on her tongue and inner lips. She is told it could be oral candidiasis. Text throughout the page goes into how syphilis can present on the skin and in the mouth. Comic Page 3: The female character visits the ophthalmologist, who says it looks like non-infectious uveitis. The character visits the neurologist, who finally asks if she’s ever done a syphilis test. The character is bewildered at the thought of having syphilis. Text throughout the page informs of different things, including how syphilis infections can’t resolve without treatment but can be curable, especially with early testing.

To celebrate World Book Day we have some fun facts to share to help raise awareness of the value of comics via The Comics Cultural Impact Collective (CCIC)There is a 'Reading for Pleasure Crisis' in the UK amongst 8-18 with rates at their lowest since records began... but not amongst comics readers! Nearly twice as many young comics readers said they enjoyed reading compared with non-comics readers (58.6% vs.33.1%).
*National Literacy Trust Research40.3% of 8-18 year olds read comics
27%of adults read comics once a month
31% of adults do/have read comics
The audience for comics in the UK is large and more diverse than for traditional artform in terms of class, ethnicity and neurodivergence.
*Research from 1. The National Literacy Trust 2. The Reading Agency 3. Professor Andrew Miles and YouGov/Manchester UniversityComics are big business.
2025 was the biggest year for comics since accurate records began (£78.7m across adult and kids' via BookScan).
Waterstones reported tripling of sales and store mix for Manga & Adult
