And to this, what I said here - that we could spend time thinking alongside Calvino and getting to know the way his mind works, its quirks, how he made unexpected connections. What a gift! We must never give that up…

I interviewed Tessa Hulls! Her graphic memoir, FEEDING GHOSTS won the Pulitzer for memoir in 2025. A first for comics as the only other example is MAUS, which won in a special category all the way back in 1992 before I was born! Coincidentally, Prof Diedrich is teaching it come Fall. Lucky students!

A new page from the GN for which we could not find a publisher. Sometimes you have to keep going in the face of rejections. The economy of comics is such that it is very difficult to justify drawing very detailed pages, but the heart wants what it wants.

the Post news is gutting for many reasons, but I can’t help focusing on the books section—how great it was, and how essential. So many worthy books barely get reviewed. I’ve had authors reach out to thank me because mine was the only post-pub coverage they got. Just awful for readers & for writers.

A reviewer just accused me of using "Computer effects" to make my art. People who know me have seen me develop my style over the years. I have all the Procreate files with dozens of layers to prove everything is hand drawn!! I know bad reviews come with the territory. But this is unacceptable.

Started...Going: finished intro to the book on teaching w/Unflattening! My thumbnails from last April & when I went to make the actual pages in Nov/Dec & realized usable page dimensions were 4x7"! An additional challenge, but geeked at how it came together! I think the book comes out in spring...
a slide with two thumbnail pages for a comic on the left side and the finished pages on the left, dated April 2024 and January 2025 respectively. Hard to explain - but it's a conversation about how Unflattening went out into the world, and what I learned from it, and what I hope people take from this book on teaching with it. There are call backs to the book, the marching sleepwalking figures, question marks that become footprints, a falling copy of Unflattening makes the Unflattening "eye" symbol. Lots of teaser images of what is sort of in this book about it. A self-portrait of me drawing opens the piece - in the same pose as my self portrait that I use on social media (which itself comes from my 2008 political comic seeing red/feeling blue). When I post the finished pages properly (when I'm given permission to do so) - I'll post proper alt-text for everything on the pages. It's a lot for two tiny pages!!
