A city survey about the waterfront excursion zone - the one that kept boats of the swimming areas (like Europe, Asia etc do with ease). Single best improvement to beaches in years. Have your say. The haters will be out.

Moneris, the Canadian system used to process 5 billion of transactions annually for 325,000 points of sale, is being sold by the owners (RBC and BMO) to a US private equity firm. I don't think this protects Canadian digital sovereignty. I signed a petition for Ottawa to intervene, and you can too.

Changes to Canada's climate now 'irreversible,' federal report says
The impacts of climate change in Canada are now largely irreversible and average temperatures are expected to rise by at least 3.5 C by the end of the century, a new government report warns.

I believe, from the balls of my feet to the top of my head, that this result is entirely due to the presence of unhoused and/or people in crisis on the subway and the way in which this relatively small problem has been ginned up by Toronto haters (one of which has the temerity to want to lead us).

lmao at Iddin-Sin, an ungrateful little shit of yore
Screenshot of a translation of this 4,000 letter, linked within the quote-skeeted article and reading as follows:

"Tell the Lady Zinu: Iddin-Sin sends the following message:
May the gods Samas, Marduk, and Ilabrat keep you forever in
good health for my sake.
From year to year, the clothes of the (young) gentlemen here
become better, but you let my clothes get worse from year to
year. Indeed, you persisted(?) in making my clothes poorer and
more scanty. At a time when in our house wool is used up like
bread, you have made me poor clothes. The son of Adad-iddinam,
whose father is only an assistant of my father, (has) two new sets
of clothes [break] while you fuss even about a single set of clothes
for me. In spite of the fact that you bore me and his mother only
adopted him, his mother loves him, while you, you do not love
me!"

I think the SCC should hear this, not necessarily because the trial court was right on section 7, but because what the Court of Appeal says here flies in the face of major s 7 cases like PHS.

The ruling says the policy evidence isn't relevant, and then goes on to specifically feel it must dismiss that evidence (without any basis for that dismissal other than vibes). This is incoherent and should be appealable.

The judge who wrote this decision, Grant Huscroft, was described in the Globe & Mail in 2014 when he was appointed by the Harper government as one of the country's most conservative law professors and a "leading constitutional scholars of the far right". Colour me shocked
Snippets from a 2014 Globe & Mail Article:
Justice Minister Peter MacKay has appointed two of the country's most conservative law professors as judges in Ontario, one of whom has publicly criticized the court he is about to join.

Reaction to the appointment from the legal community was varied. A Toronto criminal lawyer was upset, saying the government has ignored excellent lawyers for years for Ontario appeal court positions. (The lawyer did not wish to be named, expecting some day to appear before the new judges.) A senior judicial source, who also did not wish to be named, was also critical. "If you were trying to identify the leading constitutional scholars of the far right, you'd probably have Grant Huscroft at the top of the list," the source said, calling him "anti-Charter [of Rights] and basically, anti-equality rights."

There is a way of thinking taking hold in this country — that building a stronger Canada means walking away from our climate commitments. Abandoning our climate commitments will not make Canada stronger. You cannot build a stronger country on the ashes of its communities.

Reminder that Carney has cut funding for Natural Resources Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Indigenous and Northern Affairs, and Indigenous Services. And he has rolled back climate protections, abandoned emissions targets, and is building more pipelines.
Carney:

"The wildfire situation has escalated significantly over the last three weeks across the country, and particularly in Northwestern Ontario.

Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their communities, not knowing if their homes will survive.

On behalf of Canadians, I want to thank the brave firefighters, first responders, Indigenous and local leaders who are working tirelessly to keep people safe.

Our government is in close contact with provincial, municipal, and Indigenous partners and stands ready to provide any additional support as needed."
