SSHRC submitted. I'd like to thank the academy, my colleagues, and this 13 hour (not completely exhaustive) Jimmy Eat World playlist.

See also: The Goonies, which I only got 30 mins into a rewatch of in my late 20s and turned off because it was a bunch of kids screaming all the time. And some gold doubloons or whatever.

the thing about Curry and Dolly they had in common was taking their art completely seriously but not taking themselves too seriously and that is why they were such a joy

Also between Catherine O'Hara and Tim Curry, we almost have the Home Alone 2 trifecta. Universe, do your thing and skip Macauley Culkin.

Going to see Jimmy Eat World tomorrow and the show doesn't start until 9:30 and my immediate response was to groan. Trying to navigate back to the hotel through the CNE on opening weekend will be....something.

One of those days where I feel like I've been agonizing at my laptop for five hours with little quantitative output to show for it but I think I finally worked out how to organize my dissertation and chapter topics so that feels like one less hurdle.

During the Second World War, the Imperial War Graves Commission pulped most of the letters families sent 1917-1930s. That makes the letters in the Canadian archives (LAC) all the more remarkable. This sketch shows comrades cooperating to help find a man who was killed at Passchendaele in 1917:
detailed pencil sketch of a gravesite showing the location of a grave and nearby landmarks like pillboxes, woods, ridges
Part of the typed letter visible:
Captain Muirhead was shot through the chest and when I last saw him he was lying partially buried in a large shell hole about 15 yards to the rear and to the left of a pill box we were attacking. I am fairly certain that this pill box is the one shown on my map at D.4.b.1 and the grave would be approximately D.4.b.1.2 just to the North of Wolfe Copse. From memory the immediate area was something like this:
[sketch]
The whole area was a sea of mud at the time so that the only landmarks were the pill boxes and the bits of woods. It took us three days to evacuate our wounded from the front line area, then we were relieved and went back to Ypres so I am not in a position to state how much wok the burial parties accomplished later.

Overall I liked Nolan’s directorial decision making. But the final scene in which Matt Damon turns to the camera with a smile and says “In fact, you could say it was quite an Odyssey” was poorly judged.

I feel like I'm in the minority when I say The Odyssey was fine™️ Perfectly cromulant 7/10 for me but nowhere near ny favourite of Nolan's films. I don't understand the gushing over Damon/Hathaway/Holland's performances. (They weren't terrible! They were fine.™️)

Thoughtful thread about the multiple competing experiences of the Somme. I visited Beaumont Hamel in 2022 and if one can have a "favourite" war memorial, this is mine. Walking the fields dotted with cemeteries every few hundred meters is sobering & an understanding you can't gain from a map alone.
The Beaumont Hamel memorial: A metal caribou for the Newfoundland Regiment atop a stone outcropping with the sun peaking out behindThe same caribou from an angle further back against an almost cloudless blue skyAnother view of the caribou monument from a path, showing the uneven terrain, a memorial plaque and treesThe monument is miniscule now and the photo appears to have been taken from a shell hole that has grown over with grass
