The AI superintelligence scare campaign distracts media, politicians, and much of the public from the many ways generative AI is already harming people and taking lives all around the world. That’s why it’s so essential to stop echoing the tech industry’s deception. disconnect.blog/the-media-ha...
When we talk about the threat of AI superintelligence, we’re not talking about how chatbots are aiding mass shooters. We’re not talking about how chatbot dependence is pushing people into mental health spirals and threatening people’s ability to learn and think critically. We’re not talking about the women and children who are victims of non-consensual deepfakes or how AI-generated false information is flooding social media platforms, sometimes just for profit, but other times for much more nefarious reasons.

That’s not to mention to threat to jobs in a whole range of sectors, or how employers are rolling out AI tools to further surveil and deskill workers. It’s also doesn’t get to the other major aspect of all those AI tools: the growing controversy around the hyperscale data centers needed to power them and the whole range of social and environmental consequences that accompany them.

Canada is spending pipeline-scale money on fossil fuel infrastructure while our own federal scientists (NRCan) show rooftop solar could power every Canadian home. The question isn’t affordability. It’s political will. 🔁 Share if this surprised you.

CIHR has launched a trial ballon that suggests shifting to one competition a year. This is the worst idea I have heard in a long time. The only benefit is making top-line success rates look better than they are. Keep it as is, do in-person reviews, and keep the pain in the open.

This is a great piece and so much applies to scientific writing as well. In particular: Writing is “a way of learning what one thinks by attempting to say it” and “the value lies not only in the object produced but in the transformation that occurs during its making.”

Kids should be learning that AI output isn’t trustworthy, where it really comes from, and how it’s disrupting our ability to tell what’s real. They shouldn’t be learning that AI will make them more efficient or do their work for them because it can’t. That would be propaganda, not education
