if you would like to preorder the book I would be SO grateful! I drew ~75 images for this book, and (w/ help two artists) I turned one into a Riso print! If you would like a signed book plus a Riso print, you can order from my local indie, Westside books: westsidebooks.com/book/9780262...

I don't need to say this, but it's obvious to me: this dramatic drop can be laid at the feet of the Trump Administration. The impacts, I predict, will be dramatic, bad and only visible 5 to 10 years from now at the earliest.* *it's falsifiable, but quite a ways from now

I am taking a harder line on no LLMs for my gen chem class starting tomorrow. I will not be surveiling my students in any way, but I want them to know that my expectation is for them to not use LLMs in any way for my course. Would love to hear other #chemsky #chemchat folks approach!
6. Avoiding Generative AI
In this class, my expectation is that all of the work you submit (including homework) is done by YOU. Please do not use generative AI/ Language Learning Models for any assignment in my course. In return, I promise that I will never use LLMs/genAI as your instructor.

Some ways that you can avoid gen AI:

To avoid genAI in traditional google searches use https://udm14.com/Links to an external site.
Switch the default search on your computer/phone to DuckDuckGo instead of google.
(I personally pay $5 a month to use Kagi, but that is because I rely heavily on a functioning search engine.... https://kagi.com/Links to an external site.
More resources on how to avoid intrusive genAI for a variety of settings: https://www.librarian.net/notoai/Links to an external site.
ChemLibre is a great resource for chemistry content. Try searching their pages for additional support.
Come to office hours! Learning with human experts and peers >>> generative AI.

My goal is for you to learn how to think critically as a chemist. Currently, I see no value in LLMs for your education at this stage. To understand more where I am coming from :

New NSF BIO solicitation says expected number of awards is 250-300. Historically, the number of awards is closer to 800-1000 for the Directorate of Bio Sciences: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses... Unless I'm missing large, non-core programs, this seems really not good?

Scoop: For nearly a year, NSF has struggled to make new grants. Now we know that it will not catch up. In fact, NSF will award just 6,100 new grants—a 30% y/o/y decline, itself down from a previous avg. of 11,000+. In fact, the last time NSF awarded so few grants was in the early '80s.

Getting others to read the work, and ideally enjoy reading it, is a major part of the goal. The science is part but so is the story and how it's told. At least that's what I try to keep in mind while writing, for better or worse I guess.

Jarett Wilcoxen @jwilcoxen.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Comments like that drive me nuts. If there is something that led to the comment point out an example, if multiple, at least point to one and say more can be found or something generic. Especially if it's writing intended to make a manuscript more accessible to those outside a narrow field.

These instruments are key to infrastructure, and their importance cannot be understated. Failure to replace aging equipment or facilitating new research will halt progress. The low funding rates push the burden to the future, not eliminate the cost. (/end rant)

Jarett Wilcoxen @jwilcoxen.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
That’s half the number of a low year, spread over nearly two FY. NSF-MRI awards fund new or replacement instrumentation vital to national research goals. These are shared instruments serving large groups of users when issued and attract many more during the lifetime of the instrument. (2/3)

Given all the cuts and general reductions in the number of funded projects at NSF, NIH, DOE, etc, I looked u how many NSF-MRI grants have been issued (just looking up on the NSF award search). Normally each FY there are ~100-130 or so awards issued, from May 2024 to present there are 47 (1/3)

Not popular enough to gain direct funding from Congress so instead we see the pillaging of NIH, NSF, DOE, and others. Good thing those other agencies are well funded... oh wait.... www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Not to mention the universities love to brag and advertise how many fellowships they have on campus as though they are the driver not the students and at times the PI. It’s great for the the students all the way on up for many reasons beyond $$ and should be treated that way.
