As the debt increases, the proportion of the federal budget spent on debt service increases. The higher the debt, the bigger a percentage of your tax money gets paid to bond holders rather than funding Medicare or whatever. Next up: why not just print even more money?

Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site not because it was remarkable in its prime, but because it survived to our era untouched: one moment, preserved for all time. But future generations won't know what OUR world was like unless we do the same. This is why we MUST bury Toronto with a volcano

It is a very cool drawing! I quite like it. It illustrates the vast gulf between the cheap slop Google tries to jam down every search result, and the quality you get after the $200 plan works for a minute with an ultra model. I hate the former. I am quite happy with the latter.

Republicans, in their infinite wisdom, left a big gambling loophole in the Medicaid work requirements. I'm no fan of the gambling industry, but if you are on Medicaid and struggling to deal with the work requirements, taking a $580 bet on both sides of an outcome is one way of getting around them.

A version of the "Aella's birthday gangbang" Sankey diagram but it's about Bluesky posters thinking about posting Sankey diagram jokes, leading from "thought about Sankey diagram joke" through various iterations of workshopping and writing the joke (with various dead ends due to forgetting about it, losing interest, etc). Eventually at the end the joke is finally posted; some posters do numbers with it, some don't, some came in a fluffer

i think the closest analogy to 'what is going on at AI companies' is 'what was going on at JPL in the 1950s,' where communists, Satanists, swingers and adherents of a bizarre Russian Orthodox-adjacent techno-optimist microsect ended up doing a tremendous amount of important rocket science

Where do you go if you don't want to see line drawing art? Where do you go if you don't want to see art about cars? If someone calls something art, it's art to them.

The solution to the flock problem of "these are cameras that take public pictures of public places" is to give everybody access to the same tools, and exempt nobody (especially not government officials) from getting searched. Sunlight is the best disinfectant!

Humans are capable of recursive self-improvement. TESCREAL talks about a "singularity"— a machine that learns to self-improve without limit. Using their terms, I sincerely believe the slow-takeoff singularity occurred in 3000 BCE when primates invented writing, which lets us make ourselves smarter.

The Internet is stuck at a high school sophomore level of rational analysis. It's not able to appreciate "the death of the author," much less "post modernism." Still, it has its uses.

There's a difference between liking art, and giving money to people, and that difference changes at the point the artist dies. Liking a painting by Hitler today doesn't actively support the Third Reich. Buying a book by Rowling today does support TERFdom. But you can still like the art.

The S&P 500 measures nothing of the sort, for a whole host of reasons. How about comparing to inflation adjusted GDP, which is the actual measurement of that very thing? Like, I believe the underlying problem, but a bad argument for a good cause is actually bad!

No, the problem is that the index gain is a cumulative value (an integral) but the wages are a rate (a derivative) If someone had accumulated their wages since 2000, they would now be left with about 2800% of the first year wages.

The two numbers are "600%" and "12.5%" and they are put right next to each other, despite measuring using two different yard sticks. (To be really accurate, they don't even measure the same thing, so I don't even see why they are being compared.)

Why are you watering down the argument by not inflation adjusting the SP500 gains? Obvious fudges like that massively weaken your argument and make me distrust you!

Just explaining why taking the foot off the gas earlier won't work for me, even if I could do it!
000
Very Human Robot @jwatte.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
This is with "auto hold" brakes -- the gas is what starts the engine. If I press the gas half a second earlier, then that's dangerous in the cases the engine didn't yet stop. It's the latency jitter that's bad!
100
Very Human Robot @jwatte.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
What happens is: 1 stop at a stop sign 2 wait for clear traffic 3 engine stops to avoid wasting gas on idling 4 there's an opening 5 press gas pedal to merge into it 6 nothing happens for half a second because the engine needs to restart Luckily, electric doesn't have this problem at all :-)

You've got the implication backwards! He's building satellites and AI because he believes that's what will bring utopia And the rockets were a necessary prerequisite to the satellites. (Previously, though, he said the satellites were a way to finance the rockets, so that some day: Mars!)

Oh I see. Yeah that "default to turn off" is terrible. It allegedly saves gas but it also makes start from red much slower and makes "merge after stop" less predictable.
