Colleagues and I address a recent phylogenetic & evolutionary hypothesis on mosquito evolution (from Pierce et al. 2025), namely that the two subfamilies of mosquitoes were not reciprocally monophyletic, and that Culex and Anopheles were sister to one another. We do not agree.

Because folks liked my latest pigeon comic so much, here's another pigeon piece! I made this a couple years ago for a sadly now defunct publication called Pipe Wrench. I hope this piece helps spread more pigeon love. #pigeon #bird #comic #cartoon #science 🪶
A comic titled "What is a City Pigeon? By Rosemary Mosco." There's a small pigeon shouting through a megaphone. Panel 1: A banner says "It's a Dinosaur. Like all birds, pigeons descended from dinos." A pigeon roars "coooo" over the silhouette of a dinosaur yelling RARR. Panel 2: The banner says "It's a Dove. A city pigeon or Rock Dove is a member of the pigeon and dove family." A pigeon stands in glorious rays of sparkling light, with a halo over its head. Panel 3: The banner says "It's a Domestic Animal. Pigeons were domesticated millennia ago for meat and fertilizer (poop)." A cow stands in a farmer's field, saying "moo." A pigeon looks up at it and says "coo." Both have just pooped. Panel 4: The banner says "It's a Purebred Pet. Like dogs & cats, pigeons come in fancy breeds." There are three fancy pigeons: A Birmingham Roller, with rusty feathers and splotches of white. A Fantail, with its head pushed back and a huge fanned out tail. A Saxon Fairy Swallow, with a crest and huge fan

Hmm. The statistics in the first brain shrinking study seem screwy. Nonhospitalized (386) vs. Control (384) was not even close to significant, but all cases (401) vs control was just barely significant? Sorry, I don't buy this result as meaningful. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Get your Kleenex out. A group of Chicago area Rabbis attended the funeral of Wadea Al-Fayoume, the six year old Palestinian-American boy who was brutally murdered by his landlord due to his ethnicity and religion. Rabbi Ari Hart explains why the Rabbis attended the funeral in the screenshot below.
Rabbi Ari Hart, the Imam at the boys’s Mosque, and Rabbi Hodi"The Jerusalem Talmud teaches that the Jewish people are obligated to comfort the mourners of our people and of all people because of darchei shalom - the paths of peace.
Today, a group of rabbis of us went to the funeral of Wadea Al-Fayoume, a six year old Muslim boy who was killed in his home by his depraved landlord because he was Palestinian and Muslim.
This picture is with the imam of the mosque where the funeral was held. We met with the Imam, heard from the father, and stood with the boy's community as they mourned this horrific loss. We witnessed the pain. We expressed our shock and condemnation of the attack. We wept.
I can't say that it was simple to be there.
These are not simple times.
But the murder of a six year old because of his faith and his identity is not complicated. It is a heinous crime. And that's why we went today.
These days it really feels like the world has l These days it really feels like the world has lost its way.
But I can't give up on trying, yearning,

A four-panel comic with some couples' costume ideas for Halloween. In panel 1, there's a male and female magnificent frigatebird, and the male has his throat pouch inflated. In panel 2, there's an elegant bridal veil stinkhorn and a flesh fly. In panel 3, there's a scarab beetle and a dung ball (just a huge brown ball being rolled by the beetle). In panel 4, there's a leopard sea cucumber and the pearlfish that lives in its anus.

It's Thursday. You need some eels in your life, right? And some otters? Here you go! A scene of otters & eels, from an early 15th C. copy of Gaston Phoebus's Livre de la chasse. Eel blood is toxic to mammals, but otters don't care. They love them some eels. Can you blame them? 🧪🗃️
A medieval painting of otters playing in a pool, chasing and catching eels and other fish. There are 10 adult otters, and what look to be 2 younger otters in a den at the base of a tree. The otters are doing serious otter things: playing, eating, cavorting, eating, gamboling, eating, swimming, and eating. They are having a good time. For now.

It can't last, though. This pond seems way too small to support all of these otters, and the painting has a border around it. They can't leave, and soon they will turn on each other in a bloodbath that will make the Donner Party look like a tea time at the Rotary Club. If you check back with these otters in two weeks, I suspect you'll find only carnage.

That, though, is a problem for Future Otters. Today's otters are carefree, with spotless souls.

A common feature of ships going back to ancient times was the 'Ship's Cat.' #Cats were great for keeping rat populations low, preventing loss of stores, damage to ropes & rigging and in modern times, electric lines & reducing risk of disease spread.
Three sailors admire and pet a small black and white cat.

Simon The Cat
Simon, the ship’s cat aboard HMS Amethyst during the Yangtze Incident of 1949, was awarded a posthumous PDSA Dickin Medal for his devotion to duty despite suffering terrible injuries when the British warship was shelled by the Chinese Communist forces. During the 101 days HMS Amethyst was held captive on the Yangtze River, Simon devoted his time to catching the rats that threatened the crew’s dwindling rations.
