The first such meter replacement in the building would mandate the asbestos removal, which (according to the installer I spoke to) require every apartment in the complex to simultaneously ensure a pretty long power outage.

jslee @jsl.ee · 30/09/2026
But the smart meter rollout is driven by the electricity retailers on a per-meter basis rather than per-building, and there may be many retailers involved. When I asked the retailer how to coordinate this at a whole-building level, they had no idea.

have experienced this in the building I live in — a typical Sydney 1970s red brick low-rise apartment complex. The meters are installed on an asbestos backing board. The law now requires the asbestos to be removed if any work is done around it.

🧵 everyone with a smart meter* We don’t all have them yet, and for older apartment buildings there can be difficult problems due to (good) recent law changes in NSW related to asbestos

The most important thing I learned in my 20s is that being smart doesn't make you special. Eventually you need to learn to try hard and to enjoy learning to do things you're not immediately good at. It turns out that the people who didn't learn this lesson were reading Harry Potter fanfic.

That’s why we love ‘em innit You should be able to hear this photo 🤣 (it was beyond their scheduled snacktime)
A view over my shoulder of my cats on the floor behind me. Willie, the tabby, is sitting and giving me a meaningful look. Smoke, an impish dark brown medium hair cat, is up on her feet, facing my back, has motion blur, has a floofy swooshy tail, and is shouting at me

Reasonable. Guy is clearly wasting away. Second breakfast indicated. Also, the ear tufts! Magnificent! My previous tabby boi Monty had them too, but only tiny ones

I’d love to know how it ended up on a sign for an otherwise-unremarkable low-rise apartment building constructed in Sydney suburbia in the 1970s. No other such buildings in the area have anything like it, they’re all entirely bland

@symbo1ics.bsky.social you know any web gadgets for identifying typefaces in a picture? I photographed this one recently because it reminded me of … something. Blade Runner, maybe. I found this typesetinthefuture.com/2016/06/19/b... But nothing in that (very detailed!) page seems to match :-(

Hey, I notice you're trying to influence political candidates during an election. That's really inconvenient, politically speaking. Wouldn't it be better to wait until after the election, when the candidate has everything they need from you, and you have zero leverage?

The #cats seem to be enjoying their improved charging station. Had a custom cabinet made to sit behind the chair and match the window sill height. This should give them a most-of-the-day/all-year sunny spot.
Willie, a white/tabby shorthair cat, and Smoke, a dark brown medium hair cat, resting lazily on a dark green chair. Willie is mostly in the sun while Smoke is currently shaded. The chair faces away from a window. The custom cabinet is not directly visible but is covered in a plush folded blanket that is currently fully bathed in sun. Sheer white curtains partly enclose the blanket like a bower.
