a big part of ossoff's rhetorical success is it doesnt contain the compromise and caveats that are a baked-in part of democratic party rhetoric. theres no pretending that his opponent is just misguided or will be pulled back from the edge by "the good republicans." ossoff is saying "fuck this guy"

I get the immediate reaction to the President of the United States being a vulgar jackass. But...look at him. He's barely coherent, physically and mental declining, and reduced to playing the hits for a crowd too stupid to care...and he knows it. It's the last place he wants to be. It's pitiful.

This is why they have to try and keep young women out of college, keep them from leaving their birth states and try and get them to have as many kids as they can 'before they are ready, by the way. All of the reports of the Right 'outbreeding' the Left are unfounded.

was discussing this at dinner last night: one of the many problems with trying to make policy 'that the American public wants' is that the American public change their minds all the time and are frequently very very stupid.

Again, much of Pete Hegseth’s deal is the only skill his job demanded for a long time was keeping a trim figure to be conventionally pretty for stay-at-home moms watching daytime tv. His job was “be pretty,” but he knows that’s a girl job, so he’s deeply insecure and is trying to make it a boy job.

My greatest frustrating has been with policy wonks who persist in thinking we can just keep doing normal policy analysis ("calling balls and strikes") in this situation. The President of the United States is both lawless and out of his mind. That preempts all normal discussion.

One of the things that is going to change is that we’re never ever again going to be able to be dominated by public officials who tell us, ‘Trust the experts,’” Mr. Kennedy said during the Tuesday session.

“If somebody tells you, ‘Masks work, trust the experts,’ A.I. may tell you otherwise,” he added. “If somebody tells you, ‘Social distancing works, trust the experts,’ A.I. may correct that. And if somebody tells you that a vaccine will prevent transmission and infection, or you need to take it to protect your grandmother, A.I. may say it actually doesn’t do that.”

The GOP is an opposition party even when it's in power, the idea that they are the perpetual underdog is central to their internal mythology and can't be disturbed by facts or the results of elections. It's also why they're bad at, you know, governing.

So what? Even if the deal isn't cancelled in the middle of development, the best-case scenario is we're talking about a project that won't come online for another five years minimum: realistically ten. What does potential steel production in 2036 mean for prices in 2026?

It continues to be mind-boggling to me that, to first approximation, everyone in positions of power and influence in America are basing their entire worldview on various pieces of popular fiction. And not even like The Wire; instead we get governance via 24, or Terminator, or Harry fucking Potter.

My two favorite photos of Trump's trip to Ireland, where he seems not to have gotten his ass kissed like he expected.
Trump sitting with Irish President Catherine Connolly looking beaten down and haggard. She is smiling winsomelyTrump leaving his meeting with Irish President Catherine Connolly, looking even more beaten down. He's wearing the face he wore after meeting privately with Putin in Helsinki. Putin smiled broadly after that meeting. Connolly is smiling too.
