The corollary to this is that progressive urbanism must also be at least a little bit libertarian to be liberatory; to get organic, informal networks you need to allow the uncontrolled and unpredictable, whether that's different and novel housing or jobs or amusement.

I am driven to distraction by how *not angry* so many of my electeds seem. When they sit around and blab about policy this and policy that and blah blah blah, what I hear is "This is an interesting intellectual exercise for me." You should be barely able to contain yourself in public.

100%. The notion that the President can conjure up revenue streams that free him from constitutional congressional control over spending is far more alarming than just another questionable spending proposal.

Comic panel of Donald Duck and a wide-eyed young Mickey Mouse. Donald's speech bubble: "Democrats should do a huge middle class tax cut to address affordability." Mickey's speech bubble: "Fool that you are, for you treat taxation as a burden rather than the means by which our burdens are eased. Behold a civilization rich in private wealth yet starved of public provision, where every man owns what his grandfathers could not imagine and yet trembles at the thought of how he will weather an illness or loss of livelihood. Will you fight for an affirmative vision of broad contribution and universal benefit? Or will you perish like a dog?"

Just for more fun on top of everything else, there's a reasonable argument to be made that a Democratic House majority should refuse to seat the entire Missouri delegation, declare them vacant and order special elections, if this chaos works out such that they actually use the illegal map in Nov.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

Also, frankly, there’s something… seedy and unsettling? …about a bunch of people in the richest country on earth pretending at economic despair. Nobody’s saying life is easy for everyone but on average Americans are incredibly economically fortunate to live here. The solipsism is unnerving.

Legal immigration as most Americans conceive of it does not meaningfully exist in the United States. "Just come here the right way" is one of the most pernicious lies in contemporary US politics, accepted across the aisle as the goal of the immigration debate when it's impossible in reality.

At the human level, the World Cup is beautiful snackstack.net/2026/06/29/t...
Have you seen the photos and videos of Lawrence, Kansas welcoming the Algerian World Cup team and its fans? I should have known that a Midwest college town could step up like that but, well, I didn't. There's the old Kansas guy who made an Algerian flag the size of a field. The University of Kansas marching band showing up at training sessions to play the Algerian national anthem. The partying when Algeria beat Jordan in their second game. The mayor trying harissa. The chamber of commerce (!). posting wild scenes from a watch party in a blocked-off street. The random Kansans yelling "inshallah Algeria wins tonight” or wearing Riyad Mahrez jerseys and tearing up while they talk about their pride in hosting this team.“We’re so happy they came here to be part of this community,” the mustachioed man in that last video says. I want to print that up and put it in every classroom and public space as an aspirational, neighborly ethos to replace the Pledge of Allegiance.

This is a dangerous pattern with this Court: They find a delegation paired with a constraint, decide they don’t like the constraint, but appear totally untroubled by the idea that Congress delegated the power only *because* prior precedent assured them their constraints would be binding.

friendly disagreement here, not a battle to the death, but congress can choose at any time to hem both the executive *and* the court in, and i think any durable restoration of the rule of law starts and ends with the legislative branch as first amongst equals
