I know antifa isn't a real organization because I don't get 40 texts a week from them asking for donations.

There's a lot to be said about identity, solidarity. But a simple place to start: the people who are willing to fight for their neighbors when their neighbors have different problems have a very, very good chance of having neighbors to fight with when you all share problems

In the last five years, we've gone from "employees will never have to go into an office" to "employees need to be in the office because creative and innovative work can only be done face-to-face between humans" to "lol we don't need humans"

Younger people will be shocked to hear this, but way back when I grew up, anytime you saw a movie where some government official stopped someone on the street and demanded to see their identification papers, that was supposed to let you know they were the *bad* guys.

people need to internalize, very quickly, that federal research grants are a hypercompetitive contracting process not charity, and that what Uncle Sam gets in return for that money is American dominance in the future

I'm obviously not the first to make this observation, but: if we want to bring back American manufacturing, tariffing most inputs but exempting final consumer goods is just about the exact opposite thing we should be doing?

The ACA was cool because before the ACA EVERY SINGLE CHILD WITH CANCER hit their annual and lifetime limits almost immediately and were denied insurance for the rest of their lives and after the ACA that’s illegal.

all software companies are either slides or docs, no middle ground this maps to “engineering/product driven cultures” as docs companies, and “sales/marketing driven cultures” as slides companies

I love the message of this article. Instead of organizations chasing after “10x” “rockstar” engineers, they instead should focus on createing a culture and development pipeline where the average developer does great work. I’ve seen many orgs with great engineers stymied by bad dev tools & processes

The great insight in the corporate and government push for RTO is that most organizations don’t know how to measure productivity or impact of knowledge work. Even Google. So productivity boils down to hours spent in an office building.

Your regular reminder that the US air & water pollution laws passed in the 60s & 70s -- and the elaborate federal bureaucracy created to administer them -- constitute one of the most successful gov't interventions in history. WILDLY successful. The envy of the world.
