A friend of mine was raped by football players at one of our college’s frat house in 1998. She went through the internal system, which exonerated the men and accused and blamed her. We wanted her to bring charges and a court case… but she was so broken by then. She dropped out. Burn it all down.

I wrote a thread earlier today (before even reading this story, actually) about how commonly the “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story are actually procedural distortions made by people in positions of power who are invested in disbelieving her:

I didn't show you the conchas I made. Would you ask for one if you saw me walking down the hall at work with these? 🍽️ 🍜
In a silver foil pan sit twelve half sizes conchas, a Mexican sweet bread. Each is a sweet brioche bun baked with a sugar topping. The topping is scored to suggest a concha (shell).

Tonight's dinner is a study in brown with seared steak, sauteed mushrooms, brown gravy on mashed potatoes, and toast. The steak had some pink in it still which was nice. 🍽️ 🍜
On a white dinner plate sits the food as described. The pool of gravy drips of the mashed potatoes and the sliced mushrooms sit on the steak with a spring of thyme. The toast has been sliced diagonally and the halves are arranged one on top of the other.

perogies with cabbage, sausage, and apples for dinner tonight. Simple sauce of mustard, vinegar, a pinch of sugar, and a splash of water. Salt and pepper too. Simple dinner with quite a bit of flavor. 🍽️ 🍜
The cole slaw mix has been sauteed with tiny sausage meatballs, apples, and the sauce. Topped with lightly air fried perogies. Grab a fork.

Tonight's dinner is teriyaki salmon rice bowls. The sriracha is only there for emotional support. The dish doesn't need it. Carrots, broccoli, orange pepper, and onion round out the dish. 🍽️ 🍜
Two bowls it on a pale wooden table filled with a mound of rice, the teriyaki salmon and vegetables, and sprinkled sesame seeds. A bottle of Sriracha sits behind the bowls. A drip of sauce runs down the front of one bowl. Pretend that's not there and instead look at the nicely browned pieces of salmon. Don't they look good with that sticky sauce?

We were on a farm yesterday and this fine specimen of a grasshopper winked at me from the sunflower head it was sitting on. Can grasshoppers wink?

We bought a coconut curry aoli so I made this dinner tonight to try it out. A stir fry with chicken, broccoli, sugar snap peas, red pepper, carrots, ginger, garlic, and a few seasonings. Garnished green onion, chopped cashews, a drizzle of the aoli and Sriracha. Steamed rice side. 🍽️ 🍜
On a white dinner plate sits the food as described in the post: a chicken and veggie stir fry with steamed rice. The rice and stir fry are drizzled with a creamy yellow coconut curry aoli and a red Sriracha. A slice of lime is sitting on the plate, ready to be squeezed.

Some of you might not appreciate the soap flavored garnish but others of you think it is absolutely necessary. Are you team soap or team yum? Tonight's dinner is quesabirra style tacos with a simple side of refried beans, tortilla chips, and a slice of lime. Almost too spicy. Really tasty. 🍽️ 🍜
A white dinner plate holds two corn tortilla tacos that are filled with pork and cheese after having been dipped in a chipotle based sauce. After frying in bit of oil, they turn out like this. Refried beans, chopped cilantro, and some tortilla chips share the plate. Eat them like enchiladas with a fork or like tacos with your hands. If you need crema (Mexican cream) we've got some.

How about a bbq pulled pork sandwich with a side of garlic green beans? Slice of cheddar melting on top of the pulled pork.
On a white dinner plate sits a melty slice of cheddar cheese covering the crispy shredded bbq pork on a jalapeno pretzel bun that has been toasted. The sandwich is presented open face in order to show off the melt. A side of green beans with garlic and a few bits of pork sits next to the sandwich. The tines of the fork sits on the edge of the plate.

After adjusting position and camera settings, the old capital dome of Iowa City is in a halo of sunlight emphasizing the flags at half staff. I also waited for another...10 or so minutes so the sun settled lower behind the dome.
A washed out "before" picture of the old capital dome in Iowa City, IA. Only a faint outline of the dome can be discerned and the sky is almost completely white. Some trees stand in the foreground on the right.A similar shot of the dome in silhouette with a halo from the sun sitting behind the dome. The flags are at half staff above the dome, an American flag above a tiger hawk flag. White clouds sit in the background against a grey sky tinged with blue. On the right, a tree is in the foreground. This picture was taken with a few settings changes in the camera app to darken the image.

I worked on a sausage and cabbage skillet tonight for dinner. I went the fast route with a cole slaw mix rather than buy a whole cabbage. Jalapeno cheddar brat on top with some bits of potato. Stone ground mustard to top things off. Would you order this at the restaurant in your neighborhood? 🍽️ 🍜
On a white dinner plate sits a long mound of wilted cabbage and shredded carrots that have been cooked with onions, fried red potato cubes, and a vinegar and mustard sauce. The cabbage is topped with a sliced jalapeno cheddar brat and drizzled with some ground mustard. The plate is garnished with additional crispy fried potatoes. Tasting notes: the cabbage is wilted but a bit crunchy still. The acid is prominent in the sauce. The jalapeno spice comes through really well. The crispy potato garnish is a good counterpoint to the somewhat soft potatoes in the cabbage. Hmmm, maybe these are textural notes, not tasting notes...

Peanut noodles for dinner. Cucumber, carrots, chicken, with ramen noodles and modified peanut saute sauce. A slice of lime accompanies the noodles and the garnish is cilantro and sesame seeds. I could put this on repeat. 🍽️ 🍜
On a white dinner plate sits a mound of noodles all tangled up with the other ingredients. Bits of julienne carrots and cucumbers want to escape the mound. The lime is speckled with cilantro because the it was sliced after the cilantro was chopped.

These two pictures were taken about 30 minutes and 16 miles apart with the same cellphone camera at 30 x zoom. One was taken in the parking lot of a restaurant on the outskirts of town and the other about 6 miles outside of town while on a tripod. Can you tell which is which? See alt text for answer
The bright full moon with some features visible. It is ringed by an uneven ring of light against a textured background. This picture was taken from the parking lot of a longhorn steakhouse facing a series of empty lots. The spill of light from nearby buildings and cars impacted the quality of the image as did the fact this was taken with the phone held in my hands. There is a ghosting artifact to the left of the moon where a faint visual echo of the moon is superimposed on the background. In this image the bright full moon is less bright and the features of the moon are more crisp. There is no visible ring of light around the moon and no visible echo of the moon to the left as in the first image. The background is crisp darkness unless you zoom in quite a bit. This image was taken outside of town with one lamp post behind the camera (opposite the lens). There were occasional passing cars. The camera was on a tripod and not hand held. Most lights from buildings were miles away.

Today's midday walk provided some nice opportunities for pictures. Here are four.
Yellow oyster mushrooms on a tree. The bunch of them are stacked overlapping on each other. The creamy yellow caps are each smaller than a quarter. Leaves from brush and trees are in the background to the right and the bark of the tree the mushrooms are growing on fills the left of the picture.A light blue sky with whispy clouds fills the frame of the picture above a prairie of tall grass. The seed heads of the tall stems would wave in the light breeze if this weren't a still image. A ground squirrel / chipmunk clings to the branch of a small tree, surrounded by green leaves. It sat there quietly while I took this picture, certain that I couldn't see it. Aside from taking the picture I didn't interact with it, to keep the charade going.A stand of false sun flowers shine among other plants in the prairie. Their faces are open and bright yellow.

In Racine WI and getting to listen to harmonica blues on monument square Low-reen and Harpdog's firehouse blues, a free concert. They must have decided to do this when they found out it is my birthday 🎂. The weather here is great. Clear sky, nice breeze in the shade.
The blue sky has some clouds peeking over a couple of old facades on main Street in Racine. The building on the left is brown brick with a cream band near the top. The windows visible have matching white curtains. On the right, the shorter building is brick that has been painted a buttery white. Both look like they have been here for at least 79 years.

I'm putting up my breakfast for dinner today too. Breakfast nachos in this case. Tortilla chips topped with refried beans, soft scrambled egg, cooked chorizo, diced bacon, diced red pepper, queso, pickled jalapenos, and a.bit of salsa. Did I mention the avocado? 🍽️ 🍜 Tasty, but way too much for one.
On a dinner plate: a pile of nachos, topped as described. It is a colorful mound with reds, greens, yellows, and browns. A fork sits next to the plate sad because it won't be used and it knows it already.

One thing I’ve noticed about the estranged child discourse is that whenever an outsider comments on it, they’ll say something like, “Well, it’s different if you’ve ACTUALLY been ABUSED.” In their minds, there’s some threshold, never specifically defined, that makes it okay to walk away.

Tonight's dinner is brought to you by the color brown. Not brown like chocolate or brown like cardboard, but brown like the rich dark gravy you get from pan drippings after browning a pork chop, onions, and mushrooms. Yep, exactly that brown. Served with mashed potatoes and toast with butter. 🍽️ 🍜
On a white dinner plate sits a pan grilled butterflied pork chop and a mound of mashed potatoes. Both are covered with a dark gravy that is chunky with sliced mushrooms and onions. Two triangles of toast sit at the top of the plate ready to sop up the gravy.

I may have over exerted myself but... I had already started eating when I remembered to take a picture. Air fried potatoes seasoned with harissa, two slices of thick cut bacon, an over easy egg, some protein banana pancakes with more bananas, pecans, and slightly spicy blueberry compote. 🍽️ 🍜
On a dinner platter a mound of pancakes covered in sliced banana and pieces of pecan. The pancakes are drizzled with blueberry compote. A fried egg rests over cubes of air fried browned potatoes.
