A few days ago, I shared a link to the City Reliquary page which displayed my donation of a brick I rescued in 1982 from the rubble of what had been the Helen Hayes Theater. As only a fragment of my accompanying letter was visible in their photo, I thought I'd dig out and share the full letter here.
Dear City Reliquary:

While visiting your marvelous museum last week, I realized that an object which I have carried with me through four states over 33 years should from now on reside with you. And so enclosed please find a very special brick.

The Fulton Theatre opened in 1911 at 210 West 46th Street. But that isn’t the name under which I knew it, for it was renamed the Helen Hayes Theatre in 1955, the year of my birth, to honor the great actress of that name, and was demolished starting on March 22, 1982, after a temporary injunction was lifted.

The theater world was aghast, and there were many protests and arrests, but nothing could stop the machinery of progress from tearing down the historic theater.

Christopher Reeve said during those final protests (as reported in The New York Times), ''Even if they win today we must never forget how we feel here.’'

I did not forget. On April 27 of that year, I squeezed over the wooden fence protecting the site and retrieved a brick. A brick which I am now handing on to you.

How can I be so sure of the date of my acquisition of this brick? Because on April 28, I made the following entry in my journal.

[I then inserted a scan from my diary which included the following handwritten entry: "We had dinner before the show, and while wandering the Times Square area I was aghast at the pile of rubble that was the Helen Hayes Theatre, the demolition of which was begun while I was in Oregon. I picked up a brick by leaning over the protective wooden fence, and it is now sitting on top of one of my shelves."]

Can I be sure that this brick is from the Helen Hayes Theatre, and is not the detritus of a nearby souvlaki stand? I cannot. But until proven otherwise by experts in the history of bricks, let us maintain that it is.

I have treasured this memento for 33 years. Now it’s your turn.

Sincerely,

Scott Edelman

OUR FOOD AND WATER ARE MAKING US SICK, AND EVERYONE IN WASHINGTON KNOWS IT.

Corporate influence pushes the mass production of ultra-processed food and the overuse of pesticides that pollute our water and drive up rates of chronic disease and cancer.

Abdul wants to implement the right solutions to make a healthier America because he does not take contributions from the very corporations who profit from stuffing our food with ultra-processed junk.

Get toxins out of our food.
Farmers first, not chemical companies.
Break up corporate concentration in agriculture.
Clean water, guaranteed.
School meals that actually nourish.
Public dollars should buy public health.
Food as medicine.
Accountability for polluters, not immunity.

screen grab from news article reading, Harris also noted the effect the current economy is having on district employees with rising costs for everything from gas to groceries to rising health care costs. She told the board this is the first time she has had teachers come to her suggesting a food drive for teachers. “We didn’t take a vow of poverty when we got into education,” she said.

Panel 1: A simple stick-figure character looks forward and says, "I finally got my disorder under control, thanks to the meds."

Panel 2: The character closes their eyes contentedly, holding a hand to their chest, and says, "I'm focusing on myself and my work."

Panel 3: The panel is labeled "THE UNIVERSE:" at the top left. A cannon is angled upwards in the bottom-right corner, aimed into the empty space.

Panel 4: The cannon fires a startled, splayed-out cat into the air. An arrow points to the cat with the label "ANOTHER STUPID DISORDER."
