Writing is done for the day. I recently read Spring, Summer, Asteroid, Bird by @henrylienauthor.bsky.social, and it’s definitely had a positive impact on this story. I love it when someone gives me new ways to think about the work. Next up, flu and Covid vaccines to keep the ick at bay!

I open social media and the anxiety kicks in. Making everything horrific is one way to get people to spend less time online. Tonight’s alternative choices for not being online are a nonfiction book about a killer, or a fictional book about catching a killer. Decisions, decisions.

Firstly, I love the title of this poem Secondly, followers know I love a sonnet. This subverts the traditional sonnet, written to a single lover, to a lament to the many – and though forgotten the emotional imprint of their kisses remain ‘the rain is full of ghosts tonight’ #poetry #poemoftheday

This whole thread is spot on, but this in particular. Talk about consent, and not just in regard to sexual intimacy. Consent covers so much useful ground. Help boys and young men to see others as actual people. It’ll make things better for everyone.

As someone who’s dealt with chronic depression since childhood, one of the most baffling things about current events is realizing I’m not overreacting. I’ve spent my entire life being told (and telling myself) there’s no reason for how I feel. But now? Yeah, it’s actually bad.

I wrote a poem tonight, and parts of it are good, and parts of it are questionable. When that happens, I know it needs to sit for a while. Pay attention to those doubts, but give them enough space that they aren’t the only part you see.

Tonight I’m reading a collection of Algernon Blackwood’s stories. As I read “Ancient Sorceries,” I thought about the ways that a character making a decision that’s out of character can lead into a story, or deepen it. We usually talk about making sure our imaginary friends are acting “in character”

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

Another reason to extirpate "A.i." from education. If kids grow up "writing" with "A.i.," they will never develop a voice of their own. It'll just be bots all the way down. What a despicable thing to deprive them of the work and joy of finding out how they actually sound as they think and write.
