Figures from the new Retail Market Monitoring Report by @eu-acer.bsky.social and @ceereu.bsky.social. Consumers have a lot to gain from better retail tariffs that are more in line with the dynamics of the energy market, and automation of bigger loads (EV, heat pump).
Estimated financial benefits from behavioural effect by household flexibility and cluster.

In Eastern and South-Eastern Europe biggest change, up to 21% for EVSwitch to dynamic pricing:

EV: 8% bill savings. +17% with adjusting consumption behaviour.
Base: 13% / +7%
Heat pump: 6% / +6%

Really hoping we see social leasing pop up all across Europe. Poorer households are the ones that stand to benefit the most from electrification. However, the upfront costs can be too high relative to their income to be affordable.

In just four years (!!!), Bulgaria's has gone from a coal-dominated grid to a battery powerhouse. Today, standalone batteries and co-located batteries (within solar in the graph) provide flexibility to its own grid (dominated by clean sources) and those of its neighbours.

Paris has a major political advantage over cities like Berlin, as the municipality of Paris does not comprise suburban areas. In an ideal world the Ringban-adjacent districts in Berlin would comprise a municipality and not a single car coming from Steglitz would enter the Ring.

Same old story from the usual suspects. No to a bigger budget and no to joint debt issuance. No to meeting the moment. Yes to continuing a more than a decade long political harakiri that is leading to extreme right wing majorities across the EU.

Penso molt en el fet de que vivim en un món on hi ha una convergència afortunadament contingent entre virtut i necessitat. I, tot i així, estem anant massa lents. No vull ni imaginar-me com de perduda estaria la batalla si no fos així.

“stocks will be replaced by Nokia, the Finnish mobile phone giant that reinvented itself as a network provider for data centres [.], and French utility Engie.” Not just Nokia but also the company formerly known as Gaz de France, now a leader in electrification. Lesson: innovate or perish?

The growth of private credit has often been attributed to tighter banking regulation and low policy rates. Such things certainly played a role early on, but they are difficult to reconcile with the rapid growth in private credit since 2020, when rates went up and regulation, if anything, loosened

The climate debate is overly fixated on high-tech geological carbon storage. This obsession neglects the massive, immediate leverage we have in the bioeconomy and resource-efficient construction. Bio-based materials are NOT inferior carbon sinks.

One thing that bothers me about studies on the "cost" of the green transition is that they equate investments with domestic multipliers to fossil fuel spending that flows abroad, creating no domestic income. Comparing both costs at the micro level ignores their differing macro effects.

This might not come as a huge surprise if we consider that economic prosperity is a pull factor for immigration, while the persistent economic gap with the West partly explains the AfD’s political appeal in the East.

Germany, famously the country where nobody talks about migration. Which is why, in 2023, its centre-left chancellor was on a magazine cover calling for deportations “on a large scale.” The issue is that mainstream parties have adopted AfD's narrative, and it now frames the political debate.

The Commission has approved Germany's capacity mechanism, which basically supports gas over battery storage (or demand flexibility). Something I missed is that batteries face resilience requirements on domestic sourcing, while the gas burned in gas plants faces no equivalent requirement.
