¿Arden más los espacios protegidos? Cuando los datos no justifican el relato
Diversos estudios han alimentado la idea de que la protección de espacios naturales favorece la acumulación de vegetación y el riesgo de incendio. Pero los datos no demuestran esa relación causal.

Again, 'El Niño-driven'! These wildfires are fuelled by deforestation, land clearing, peatland drainage for palm oil plantations, and anthropogenic climate change. To say 'El Niño-driven' deviates from the actual causes. 🧪🌍🔥🌳🍁🦍

Apparently Google has only partially updated its satellite photos of Gaza, so there are currently these weird images where whatever algorithm they use is utterly failing to blend before and after shots
Satellite image of two blended photos from above Gamal Abdel Nasser Street in Khan Yunis in central Gaza. The bottom half shows densely packed neighborhoods with, many of which appear to have sustained damage from aistrikes, with some small patches of trees. The top half shows continuations of the neighborhoods in the south, but with much of them now completely flattened to yellow sand and smudges of grey rubble. Google Maps pins indicate that this area contains 2 restaurants and 3 mosques.Satellite image of two blended photos of northern Gaza. The bottom left corner shows small neighborhoods of white-roofed houses lined with green trees, giving way on the bottom right to flattened neighborhoods covered in rubble, red sand, and bulldozer tracks. The top half of the image is a wasteland of yellow sand and grey rubble from dozens of demolished buildings, including Google Maps pins for a mosque and an site marked UNRWA-GFO Two blended satellite photos of northeast Gaza, showing stands of green trees in the left half giving way to barren yellow sand marked by tree stumps and bulldozer tracks on the right.

Here is wood harvest since 1970 (from FAO) and how it is used. The lightest shade is implied bioenergy use, the other shades are product use. Even if there is sustainable regrowth after harvest (not to be assumed), the net flux will be positive as steady state is not yet reached. 2/2

Does wood harvest & regrowth lead to net emissions? An age old question... In the Global Carbon Budget, the net flux over time is positive, even if harvest & regrowth is technically "carbon neutral". Why? Because wood harvest continues to grow! essd.copernicus.org/articles/18/... 1/

Even from the C sequestration point of view, planting trees in savannas is not a good strategy. "...maintaining grass-dominated savannas, rather than planting more trees, is a better strategy for supporting both carbon storage and biodiversity." fesummaries.wordpress.com/2026/06/17/g...

Savanna soil carbon accrual occurs through particulate organic matter from grass rather than tree biomass, regardless of atmospheric CO2 levels

This is why cities need trees. Hard surfaces and parked cars can reach extreme temperatures, while shaded grass and tree-covered areas stay dramatically cooler. This is the urban heat island effect in one image: hard surfaces absorb and radiate heat, while vegetation and shade reduce it.
