I’ve argued that this El Niño event is likely the most deviant climate event we’ve witnessed. A magnitude I don’t think any climate scientist could have foreseen a year ago, even given our rapidly warming climate. Perhaps a Grey Swan event?

How open science is silently destroyed: 1st) Use open and closed datasets, but only offer co-authorship to researchers with closed data in exchange for sharing their data. 2nd) Don't even bother to make the data used openly available upon publication.

 La crisis de los polinizadores a veces se focaliza en la abeja de la miel. Por un lado, está experimentando mortalidades muy altas, pero al ser una especie manejada por los apicultores fomentan que haya más colonias. El número de colonias de abeja de la miel está aumentando, pero no es un proceso natural. Ocurre por una cuestión ganadera. El resto de especies de abejas silvestres en general están más afectadas por estos cambios ambientales porque no hay nadie que las cuide. España es uno de los lugares con más diversidad de abejas. Solo en España hay más de mil especies de abejas diferentes. Todas contribuyen a la polinización y son muy importantes, a pesar de que no hacen colmenas ni nos dan miel.P: ¿Uno de esos cambios debe ser en la apicultura?

R: La pequeña apicultura es una actividad que convive perfectamente con la naturaleza. En el otro extremo hay grandes apicultores que tienen millones de colmenas. Muchas veces, para alimentar todas esas colmenas, el recurso de flores no es suficiente en un sitio, sino que las mueven de un sitio a otro siguiendo la floración. Ahí es cuando puede empezar a competir con las especies nativas, sobre todo en años secos y paisajes degradados. Las altas densidades de abeja de la miel es una presión más para las poblaciones silvestres. Al tener muchos individuos juntos, la probabilidad de enfermedades es más alta. Y si encima las mueves, hay más probabilidad de dispersión de estos patógenos. La abeja de la miel tenía poblaciones silvestres en España, pero ahora son muy anecdóticas. En casi toda España prácticamente no existen poblaciones silvestres de abeja melífera, sobre todo debido a los patógenos introducidos con el manejo de las abejas por apicultores.P: ¿Qué efecto pueden tener colocar colmenas en parques nacionales, como en el caso del Teide?

R: El Teide es muy particular porque es un ecosistema especialmente frágil. El equipo de Alfredo Valido, científico titular del Instituto de Productos Naturales y Agrobiología (IPNA-CSIC), ha visto como en muchas de las especies de plantas endémicas de ese parque nacional, la abeja melífera desplaza a las abejas nativas, reduciendo su capacidad de reproducirse. Desde el punto de vista de conservación, la abeja de la miel no deja de ser un elemento nuevo en el parque natural. Añades una especie de abundancias muy altas, muy competitiva y que va a desplazar a otras especies. Hay que decidir cómo gestionar los parques naturales.P: ¿Cómo podemos, a nivel personal, ayudar a los polinizadores?

R: Hay acciones tan simples como no hacer nada. Si tienes un pequeño jardín puedes dejarlo un poco más asilvestrado sin usar pesticidas. Si sale una planta con flor, no pases el cortacesped cada dos semanas, sino a lo mejor cada mes y medio, dejarle un poco más de vida. También podemos escoger qué plantas tenemos. En general, plantas nativas van a ser mucho más apreciadas por los polinizadores nativos. Cuanta más diversidad haya, mejor. Lo mejor que podemos hacer es ofrecer recursos florales y sitios para nidificar, pero esos son a veces más difíciles de gestionar. Cuanto más salvaje dejes a veces una zona, más fácil es que encuentren sus sitios para nidificar.
