Leveraging the GBR-MGD, we find that seawater microbes can reliably predict fisheries management practice. Microbes indicative of No Take Marine Reserves (NTMRs) have streamlined, low-GC genomes, fished reefs do not—turned out to be very interesting! Excellent work led by @markoterzin.bsky.social

Tiny fish feed coral reefs! In 2019, we showed that tiny, bottom-dwelling fishes called 'cryptobenthics' account for >50% of consumed fish flesh on reefs, despite contributing <5% to standing reef fish biomass. They're literally the reef's cryptocurrency 🪙🤏🐟 www.science.org/doi/full/10....
