One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Gravity Well @gravitywell.games · 06/10/2026
When we started Gravity Well our goal was to create the best place in the world for developers to do their best work. Sadly, today we're having to take a big step back in achieving that goal. Gravity Well lost our funding this summer and have been searching for a new partner. We haven’t secured funding yet.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Gravity Well has had to say goodbye to the majority of our team - over 40 amazingly talented developers.

Everyone was informed of the situation as it was unfolding, and have been aware of this possibility if we were unsuccessful in finding new funding. We take it seriously that the team has stuck with us throughout this process, hopeful that we could find a solution before funds ran out. We are truly sad that we couldn't get it done in time to keep the team together.

Gravity Well will continue with a much smaller team as we continue to fight for survival, but given the current state of the industry our future is uncertain.

To the team members affected today: know that you are appreciated and that this isn't a result of your skillset or ability. We are heartbroken to be sending you out into this job market.

If you see someone from Gravity Well apply for a role at your company, please consider them. They are amazing and would make any development team stronger. We will deeply miss being able to work alongside them every day.

Sincerely,
Drew, Slothy, and Mon

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

Reading about Socrates, apparently he was horrific to look at and was still having kids in his 60s. Unbelievable game. Imagine you're at the bar and a man who looks like a beluga whale hits you with "The only thing I know is I know nothing" and you're just powerless to resist

It's good that we invented things like "government" and "the economy" but we can't meaningfully participate in them if the people in charge are constantly rubbing in our faces that these things are fake, and in fact you are a naive doofus if you think otherwise. That's a society on life support

Bluesky pals! I have a sci-fi graphic novel called DRIVE, & it's my favorite thing I've ever done! If you need a long, escapist read at the moment the entire thing is free to read, here: drivecomic.com (THIS PAGE: Cayetano)
PANEL 1: The Grand Council audience looks up at the stage. We see Nando in the second or third row.
SPEAKER (off panel, in the background): …And with that, we will adjourn for one hour, in order to…
TRES PRIMO (off panel): ‘Nando! Hey, ‘Nando!

PANEL 2: NANDO turns around to see the SQUAT PRIMO and TALL PRIMO.
NANDO: Oh! Hi! Thank goodness you’re here.
TALL PRIMO: We have a lot to discuss. Bur first…what of the Nyx?
SQUAT PRIMO: Any word?

PANEL 3: NANDO looks down at SQUAT PRIMO.
NANDO: They’re apparently horrified with what happened. Said “THESE NYX WILL HAVE SUBMITTED TO THE NEW EMPEROR’S JUSTICE.” Then surrendered to the Armada.
SQUAT PRIMO: To the Armada??? Who took them into custody?

PANEL 4: NANDO continues to talk to SQUAT PRIMO, as an older bearded gentleman in military regalia appears behind him.
NANDO: An Admiral I’ve never met. Admiral—
SQUAT PRIMO: CAYETANO.

PANEL 5: NANDO continues exuberantly as SQUAT PRIMO points to the man behind him.
NANDO: Yes! “Cayetano Cruz.”
SQUAT PRIMO: Um…allow me to introduce you, ‘Nando.

PANEL 6: CAYETANO CRUZ holds his arm out to shake NANDO’s hand. His uniform has stripes on the arm, ropes hanging from his epaulettes, and a sash. He is a fancy military man. Nando meets his handshake.
CAYETANO: Fernando. I served under your father for six years. He was the best of men. I AM AT YOUR SERVICE.

PANEL 7: NANDO responds then CAYETANO pulls the handshake firmly toward him. The shadows intensify.
NANDO: Oh1 But aren’t we both up for…?
CAYETANO: Make no mistake: I AM ALSO AT YOUR THROAT.

another researcher accuses OpenAI of training on conversations and then claiming a breakthrough
Valerio Capraro @ValerioCapraro
X.com
BREAKING: OpenAl might have stolen another major proot.
In a detailed Mastodon post, which I report in full in the comments, Andreas Thom presents several pieces of evidence suggesting that OpenAl may have trained Astra on conversations in which he and Gábor Kun were working on Gromov's soficity conjecture, one of the ten problems OpenAl later announced Astra had solved.
I know Andreas. We met several times early in our careers. He is an exceptional mathematician, a leading expert on sofic and hyperlinear groups, and one of the most respected scholars in the field. He has spent two decades working on this problem.
If his account is correct, this is not a minor dispute over attribution. It would mean that unpublished human work was absorbed into a model and then presented to the world as a breakthrough by the model itself. And if the allegations raised by Levent Alpöge, Tristan Buckmaster, and now Andreas Thom are all substantiated, we are no longer looking at isolated incidents.
We may be looking at one of the greatest intellectual scandals in the history of science.
Al is not discovering new mathematics.
Al is stealing human discovery.
