Unless a Fender-shaped headstock is a requirement, you MUST at least check out Sire. I (a guitarist) have both their short-scale U5 and top-of-the line P10dx (both with P/J pickups) and I alternate between laughter and anger at the quality difference from similarly priced Fenders & Squires.
